To Paint Or Not To Paint?

We saw a house that was very attractive except that the white kitchen cabinets looked odd with granite counters that are a combination of dark brown and black. Ordinarily one would presume that white looks good with anything, but for some reason, I really didn't care for it in this case. So my question is: can white cabinets be painted or stained and not chip in the future? Has anyone experienced painting or staining cabinets? Does it look good in the long run?

I would hesitate to paint them. I can't picture why the combination looks bad. Usually it looks nice;

You should get a professional for this type of project. Preparation, cleaning, sanding, minor repairs (did I mention cleaning), are all critical to getting a good durable finish, I have seen cabinets refinished that were not properly cleaned and sanded, and the paint peeled after several months. I believe there are several firms in the area that do this, but I cannot make any recommendations.

We had ours painted by a professional, and after 2 years, they still look very nice and no chipping. The painter took of the doors and hardware and took them to his shop. When he did the cabinets, he put a tarp around every place needed. They look great!

This is a question for Len of Investment Painting Contractors. You can find him in the members list under his company name, and probably in the ToTv sponsors section.

Erica I sent you a PM about your cabinets. I'll be home this afternoon to answer your questions. I'll show you cabinets that have been painted for 11 Yrs, no chipping. Len & Mary the retired half of Investment painters
