Isolation is the Dream Killer

Just listened to an incredibly interesting talk by Barbara Sher. We are fortunate, here in The Villages, that we have multitudinous opportunities to avoid isolation.

I just love living here and reading TOTV. So many people here have such diverse knowledge and specialities, and we all benefit from their knowledge!

So true (above quoted from a different thread)

To me, this is the primary attraction of The Villages. No one need be isolated in TV.

UNLESS they're relegated to their house due to illness or infirmity and all they have is social media to rely on for their outlet.

That, of course, is true just about anywhere. My point was that within The Villages for those who are able there are many opportunities for socialization which are not available to seniors in most places. TV truly is an oasis for seniors.

But even then, social media can be a form of socialization for shut-ins.

But I agree... if I were alone, TV is where I'd want to be.

And, not only social media but TOTV, I would think, adds a lot to experiencing The Villages vicariously. My sister has lived in another Florida city for far longer than us and she is always surprised at how much I know about TV. I attribute that to the wonderful, miscellaneous threads on TOTV. I find it not only informational but frequently entertaining. The sense of community may not be an antidote to isolationism, but I believe in some ways it helps to curb a little of the loneliness that some may feel.

I can only speak for my neighborhood but even someone who is housebound would be visited and cared for by the neighbors. Many of us have cooked and cut grass and helped however we could for neighbors who have needed help.
