What kind of grass? Ready to DIY

After reading many post from people fertilizing their own yards, I have decided to do it myself. I think we have St. Augustine, but I am not sure. We live in an area that was built 14 years ago-does anyone know for sure what type of grass in that age lawn? I know we do not have Zoysia. (sp)

I would bet it is most likely St. Augustine or other wide blade drought resistant grass.

Here is a good pic: http://commerciallawncareequipment.c...tAugustine.jpg

From what I read you must guard against chinch bugs with this grass.

It would be St Augustine or Bahia. Those are the only grasses they put in back then. Ask your lawn guy or your weed control person or your neighbor.

Make sure you know what grass you have because they take different lawn care.

DIY could become expensive. You need to purchase the chemicals and the spreaders and store them when not in use.

What kind of grass?

You probably have St. Augustine. It is a much thicker grass then what they install now (Zoysia). However just a little warning St. Augustine grass is much higher maintenance grass then the Zoysia and when they went to Zoysia a lot of people started taking care of there own because it is easier to maintain.

thatch in lawn

given the large frost die off should we be renting a thatch machine to thin the lawn

Has anyone redone their lawn from Augustine to Zoysia? It might be cheaper than artificial turf - Augustine is driving me crazy. I wonder if it is permitted to switch.

zcaveman 03-10-2010 10:46 AM

The guy next door to me had his bahia replaced with zoysia. Front and side yards only. I don't think he even asked.

The only thing in my deed restricions is that 51% of the visible area (front and sides?) is supposed to be real grass.

What would it matter if you switched it over?

Virginians 03-10-2010 12:30 PM

It might matter (1) if it stuck out like a sore thumb because it was so different than the rest of the neighborhood. And (2) if it were to encroach into the neighbor's yards as weeds do.

Zoysia grass is real aggressive on spreading, doesnt grow real high as fast like St. Augstine. but can invade plant beds and so on. but it is really nice when taking care of.
Use Scotts Bonus S weed and feed and on Zoysia and will grow and green up good
