Need Air Conditioning Help!

Update:

I would like to start by thanking everyone who has replied with information and/or recommendations on how to solve this issue. I ended up having multiple contractors come to the house, hence the delay in response, and was even quoted on a new system!

Fortunately, my last call turned out to be the right one- The Air Conditioning and Heating Wizards, run by Kevin, were able to come and fix the problem. After searching through the forum here and Google, I decided to give them a call. That decision ended up saving me thousands of dollars.

Kevin said this was not the first call like this he had received and quickly diagnosed the problem having to do with the air ducts themselves. Hundreds, not thousands, later and the problem has finally been fixed.

I would recommend Kevin and his services one-thousand times over!

Hello,

I am in desperate need of some assistance with the air conditioning system in my house.

For some reason my bedroom is several degrees warmer than the rest of my house. With the colder weather we have been experience I haven't minded it so much. However, now that we are getting warmer days intermittently mixed in it is becoming extra apparent the difference in temperature.

I've had someone take a look at it and claim that I need an entire new duct system??

I was hoping someone can help me before I spend thousands of dollars to fix one room.

Best,

Steve

Call Chuck Farrell, he is honest and knowledgable and will check out your system and give you good advise on your options. When our system goes, it will be the first and most likely only call we make.

Take a look at the vents, perhaps some vents in other rooms are partially closed?

This is a common problem and difficult to solve. The basic issue is that most homes are single zoned with the thermostat in a common area (that tends to stay warmer/cooler than the periphery of the house.). If you have a remote bedroom, like we do, with two outside walls plus several windows (with a low insulation rating), it's temperature can fall/rise faster than the common area where the thermostat is located. As the sun rises, one side of the house will be warmed faster than the other side of the house. The remote bedroom can only be heated/cooled when the system is running and that is controlled by the temperature changes in the common area where the thermostat is located. Our remote bedroom is fine when the system is running but it cools/warms faster than the rest of the house as soon as the system shuts off. If you want truly uniform temperatures throughout the house you need a multiple zone system. A properly sized system, and a system with a multi-speed compressor, will tend to have longer runtimes which will help to maintain more uniform temperatures.

However, by Florida code, a so-called Manual J heat load/heat loss calculation was done for your house. The results are actually on-line. One of the results of this calculation is a specification of the cubic feet per minute of airflow that the duct system must be designed to provide to each room. It may be worthwhile to have the airflow measured to each room to make sure it matches the requirements of the Manual J calculation. There are people who can do this. It is possible that the contractor did not design and install a duct system that matches the Manual J requirement. In that case, a call to The Villages Warranty Dept. would be in order as you have a 10-year warranty on systems in your house. However, even if the duct system is spot on correct, the issue with a single zone system that I discussed above will result in some temperature unevenness across rooms.

There is no cold air return in my small bedroom which also heats up. If you leave the door open it's fine. I agree with CW call Chuck.

Chuck Farrell is amazing. I called him in for a Replacement System but they ended up doing a maintenance and adjusting several vents and Bingo we're comfortable. Can't say enough good about his Company 352-753-9497.

I also thought I needed a return in an office far away from the main unit. Turns out I put a cushion under the door to keep the heat and cold out of the main house and that gap under the door was actually the return. Chuck's man removed the cushion and what do you know, I'm either Hot or Cold at the correct time.

Nucky I have thick carpet, I'm going to take an inch off the bottom of the door. Thank You Len

If you want to address yourself install keen smart vents, available on line or some sizes on Amazon. You can change your vents remotely. Once installed you effectively have zoned heating and cooling. No access to the attic is required
