weather radio

I've read a lot about weather radios on TOTV and decided it's not a bad idea to have one.
Does anyone have any recommendations on which brand/model to buy and are they available locally?

Midland model WR-100. They are available at ACE hardware and I believe they cost around $30. Not sure but I think Publix also sells them.

Hi folks,
These radios are a must. According to the local fire department the only brand to get is a Midland. They are available at many locations. We bought ours at Best Buy. After the purchase, I suggest that you take it to local fire house ( on Bonita) and they will set it up for you in a couple of minutes. Welcome to Duval.

I've had a couple of Midlands, one stop working and one is in our RV.

For home I have the Oregon Scientific WR602. It's a portable handheld unit. Although it sits in the charger 99% of the time I have taken it with me to play golf when I knew there was a potential of a severe storm. I think I bought it on eBay for about $60. It's by far the nicest of the weather radios I've had.

Thanks for the input. I'll check them all out.
In upstate NY there's not much need for them and I wouldn't have the faintest idea where to buy one. Our weather here tends to come slowly with plenty of warning before serious storms hit.
Thanks again!

I bought a Midland WR-300 a while ago and really like it. Then as a housewarming gift for a friend, I bought a WR-100 model at Publix. But when I set it up, the display was bad. Brought it back and exchanged it for another one and set it up. But the next day, the unit was dead and wouldn’t even turn on.

I got a refund and ordered a WR-300 from [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Midland-WR-300-MIDLAND-WR300-Weather/dp/B00009V2YV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270211820&sr =8-1"]Amazon[/ame]

For $16 more, the WR-300 is a much better radio. Unlike the WR-100, the WR-300 allows you to selectively shut of some of the alerts like the weekly and monthly tests, etc.
