Assisted Living Question

Does anyone know of any decent assisted living facilities in the area that have the possibility of switching over to medicaid after all money is exhausted or do you then have to move out?

Normally, medicaid does not cover assisted living facilities. If you are in an assisted living facility, and you run out of money, then you need to move to a nursing home. Most nursing homes will accept medicaid patients. Freedom Point is probably the most well know facility that offers independent living, assisted living, and nursing home care in The Villages. However, you do need to qualify, based on substantial financial assets to move in. I don't know about Florida, but some assisted living facilities are authorized to accept medicaid patients, based on the state approved program, but this is usually a very limited program.

You will need to ask each facility if they have Medicaid beds. Also if they do expect them to require at least 3-5 years of private pay. Otherwise you are as stated above looking at nursing homes.

That's what I was wondering, if some assisted living facilities here have the option of kicking over to medicaid after money has run out and a specific number of years have been fulfilled with private pay. I know some up north do that and then you're able to stay at the same place but have to move into a semi private room. I will just have to do the legwork. The Golden Years...

I just want to say a couple things.

Sumter Place is not owned by The Villages. It is owned/operated by KR Management, Indian Shores, FL. The Villages owns the parcels on which the buildings sit.

It can be misleading when comparing the size/style of rooms, such as "studio apartment," without also comparing the level of medical care. Obviously, a studio in an Independent Care facility will likely be less than a studio in an Assisted Living facility - within the same general geographic area.

To echo the above, there is a difference between independent living, assisted living, memory card and nursing homes. Within each of those, especially assisted, there are different levels of care. Each level cost more on top of your base price which depends on your type of unit. If you are not rushed take time to visit facilities and ask questions.

Yes Sumter Place has Villages amenities. There are several residents there who play golf. My mother was in the assisted living facility, Sumter Place, until recently.

All of the above is correct.

The LEVEL of CARE will depend on cost. If you need Medicaid..the paperwork has to be filled out at least 3-6 months ahead of time so I was told. Summerfield Suites on 441 near Spruce Creek does take Medicaid. Medicaid has strict guidelines for qualifying.

All the best in your search.
