Ridiculous Pin Placements on Champ Courses
 

Does anyone else find the current pin placements on most Champ courses too challenging? When I arrived in spring of 2017 I was happy to find golf courses that were enjoyable and not too difficult. But now the pin placements have become in my mind ridiculous, always on a ridge, and at this time of year especially challenging with the ground so hard. Have the superintendents (or greeenskeepers, not sure what title is used in TV) made a conscious effort to make greens more difficult because the courses are not that long (from the Green and White tees which is where most Villagers play from)?

Pin placements on both the Exec and Championship courses are often placed by individuals who have no understanding of the game. They are a joke and cause slow play to be even slower. So easy to remedy.

Played Palmer today ant not one was easy. All on slopes.

I don't have the game any more for the Champioship courses, so only play the Executives.
I must say that on the Executive courses the pin placements on many greens, are far to hard for the skill level of many of the players.
Whilst my long game is a distant memory, I still have a reasonable short game, and I struggle with many of the pin placements.
Dry very fast greens. Miss from an upper slope, and you are 10-15 feet past the pin coming back.

For the championship courses, I would suggest speaking to the pro/facility manager. For the execs, contact Eric van Gorder. I agree the holes are sometimes cut by someone who may not understand the difficulty, but is trying to spread the wear.

We had an occasion where the hole on Roosevelt #9 was cut at the top of the false front so any missed putt from any direction rolled completely off the front of the green. Contacted Eric and it was moved within an hour.

I dont complain about pin placement because i believe that is a part of challenge. I do agree that pin placement is determined by workers who may not care where they put the pins.

It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone could do it. The hard is what makes it great.

Difficult pin placements are fine. I have, however, seen some pin placements that are essentially inaccessible. For example, on the slope at #1 at Volusia. On one particular day, a putt from below the hole either went in or rolled back 15 feet. This can lead to delays as people 4 and 5 putt and thus cause backups. I have seen a similar situation on #9 on Sweetgum.

what makes golf difficult is the swing and the lack of people willing to make a conscious effort to improve.

I understand moving the pin around to prevent uneven wear and tear. So when I play a course(exec)where conditions warrant I utilize free choice and a 2 putt rule. On championships it depends on whether or not there is betting involved. If not then 2 putt rule.

The holes rarely need to put placed on ridges and when the green speeds are high it is up to the person who places pins to make sure the ball won't excessively past the hole if moving at a proper pace.

From USGA guidelines for fair pin placement...

"An area two to three feet in radius around the hole should be as nearly level as possible and of uniform grade. In no case should holes be located in tricky places, or on sharp slopes where a ball can gather speed. A player above the hole should be able to stop the ball at the hole."

When you are on the green -- take a three -- save time and frustration

That is done only to frustrate the snowbirds.

All is fine because it helps me work on my handicap for summer play back in Virginia!
