Red Cross Volunteers
Hi All,
Moving down in mid-June. I am sure that a place the size of TV has lots of Red Cross volunteers, or former ones. I want to remain active once we are settled in our new home. Can someone tell me if there is a TV chapter or where the nearest one is located? I just stepped down as Captain of local Disaster Action Team and also participate in the Military messages support program, They just changed the name, but it used to be AFES (Armed Forces Emergency Services). Old timers will know what I am talking about. |
People like you make a difference. Thanks for all you do!

Red Cross is in the area but I think their office is in Leesburg so am not sure of the volunteer opportunities there.
Why don't you try some alternatives. The Villages Regional Hospital has a very large and active Auxiliary that you can join. Most people work a four hour shift once a week at the hospital - everything from Front Desk Greeter to Emergency Room. We also have a very active CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) with teams in district as well as speciality teams such as Medical and Security. They have no control over the number of emergencies (we did have a tornado and they got called out) but the teams do provide first aid coverage at both town squares during special events (i.e. St. Paddys Day parade, Italianfest, Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras, etc.) as well as first aid coverage at Veterans Park for all their special events (i.e Pearl Harbor Day, Memorial Day, etc.). You have to go through their training program (eight weeks, once a week, for a few hours each session I think it is) but you might enjoy it. There are all sorts of other opportunities to volunteer in TV including (but not limited to) AARP Tax Aides, SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of the Elderly), Seniors Vs Crime, COPS (Citizens On Patrol), the VA Clinic, DAV Van Drivers, etc. You will find many more opportunities to help than you'll ever be able to fill. |
New Covenant United Methodist Church (behind Crispers on 446) has a Disaster Preparedness and Response Team.

Thanks for above suggestions. I have taught disaster preparedness for Red Cross in local community at churches, community centers, etc. I know that I will find plenty of opportunities, and will seek them out. Having been a long time volunteer of Red Cross, was hoping to continue, but maybe time for something different. I am also a Hospice volunteer and have already checked into that for TV.
