Wonky mouse

Windows 7 laptop

Mouse started acting up today -- opening multiple windows on a single click, taking several tries to close a window, slow to respond, highlighting not holding when I drag, etc. It eventually works correctly but I have to struggle with it. I had to click into this text window multiple times before the pointer showed up.

I tried two other mice I have but it was the same thing.
I re-installed the mouse's device driver with no improvement.
The laptop's touchpad is still working correctly.
I played around with the mouse settings to toggle back to the defaults, but didn't help. I hadn't changed them, anyway.

Any suggestions to fix, or perhaps the name of a good repair tech?

Go to settings, defrag and optimize the hard drive.

If its a wireless mouse, replace the batteries.

Thanks! Norton's performance suite runs in the background but I forced a manual scan to defrag/optimize -- it said there was nothing to fix, but the mouse is working correctly again.

I had the same problem (wireless)...only it was sporadic.

Changed batteries, used compressed air in case gunk had gotten into it...still had issues.

Bought a new one for less than $20...voila!

In other words...they do wear out.

Good luck.
