Whole house water filter ?

I was told that if you have a good whole house water filter, you don't have to change the refrigerator water filter

Is this fact?

I would definitely change the refrigerator water filter to prevent bacteria from growing in it and prevent the filter material breaking down and contaminating the water. If you are not going to change it, then remove it.

All I can say is we have a whole house water filter and still use a refrigerator filter. If we don't replace the refrigerator filter then after 6 months to 1 year the water coming out of the refrigerator slows down to a trickle until we replace the filter.

Our refrigerator filter has not been changed in 8 yrs, water flow good, ice crystal clear- don't see the need to filter a filter, will remove the filter--its a Whirlpool with the filter in the base

You don't need a filter cartridge in the fridge, just remove the cartridge and put the blue cap back on if it's a Whirlpool.

Where is the blue cap ?

If your filter is located at the bottom of the refrigerator near the floor, it probably does not have a blue "bypass" plug. You can just remove the filter and close the little door. This assumes that your Whirlpool filter is a "type 1" filter. However, if the filter is a "type 4", then it would require a bypass plug. The filter type is indicated on the filter.

We usually "recycle" the change filter alarm 2 or 3 times, before changing. We have a whole house filter and a water softener..

As for the blue plug, when you bought your house it should have been with the refrigerator, if you never got one or lost it, you can ask here if someone has one they are not using. The blue plug goes in place of the water filter.

According to Whirlpool, there is no blue plug for the type 1 filters. You just remove the filter.

We just removed the filter from our Whirlpool. If you read the specs, the pool filter is far less effective than the whole home filter, so continuing to replace the refrigerator filter would be a waste of time, effort, and money. I still have to reset the filter alarm every 6 months or so - you would think that if the refrigerator knows the filter isn't there, it would turn off the alarm.

retiredguy123 06-06-2019 03:58 PM

The refrigerator filter alarms, lights, etc. are just a timing device with no connection to the water filter. Most are set to warn you after 6 months.
