Feeding the birds

Occasionally I see folks sitting in their cart, feeding the ducks and small birds. What and where to purchase for feeding the birds in the park?

villagetinker 07-19-2019 08:18 PM

Not allowed, and it is my understanding this is actually illegal. Please do the wildlife a favor and report these people, call community watch.

I hope she's using all natural, preservative-free food.

But I think it's a no-no, regardless.

I would question whether feeding small birds is illegal in Florida. Perhaps, it may be discouraged by some and in certain locations, But calling community watch may be a bit dramatic. They would have to be in continual presence along the boardwalk at LSL.

While you are almost always right, on this one you are not. It is only illegal to feed sandhill cranes and threatened species. The regulations are HERE.

Quote:

In Florida, it is illegal to feed manatees, sandhill cranes, bears, raccoons, foxes, and alligators. Intentionally placing food or garbage, allowing the placement of food or garbage, or offering food or garbage in such a manner that it attracts black bears, foxes, raccoons, or sandhill cranes and thereby creates a public nuisance is prohibited.

Additionally, intentionally feeding species listed as threatened, endangered, or of special concern - including Florida scrub-jays - is prohibited unless authorized by FWC permit
If it were truly illegal to feed any species then all backyard bird feeders would be prohibited

That certainly was a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious reply.

And don't feed the birds bread! It has no nutritional value for them and will only fill them up to where they won't eat the good stuff. They could die from malnutrition if given enough. You can't tell people this...I tried.

While you are feeding the birds, don't forget to feed the alligators

villagetinker 07-20-2019 11:26 AM

Thank you for finding the regulations, setting the record straight, and correcting me, I did not think about backyard feeders. I do recall seeing signs (Lake Sumter Landing?) about not feeding the birds, along the boardwalk, thought this was a general rule.

Bread is a NO-NO!

You are correct, Steve!

The worst is feeding bread to ducks which they seemingly love.
It's like giving arsenic to a human and is a No-No.

Regardless of what is legal or not, please don't feed any kind of bread to birds or animals.
