Talk of The Villages Florida - Wildwood approves annexation of land

After a voluntary request, Wildwood commissioners approved the annexation of portions of land southeast of the Village of Fenney on Monday. The annexation will encompass nearly 770 acres, and include parcels located near county roads 470 and 501. This newly acquired land may mean an expansion for the Village of Southern Oaks development.

The request came from The Villages Land Co., the developer of the Village of Southern Oaks, in support of the land owners, Sanders Transfer Co. and Duval Farms. According to the agenda found on Wildwood’s website, the request was approved on the basis that, “Annexation into the City is appropriate because the property is contiguous to the City limits and contained within the City’s Joint Planning Area with Sumter County, which allows for voluntary annexations within the planning area…”

The two smaller parcels of land acquired are located north of CR 501, and west CR 470. It is speculated that these areas could be used for commercial or residential development. Whereas the larger parcel of land east of CR 470 backs up to land that was labeled for agricultural use two years ago for Buffalo Hide and Co., and has limited road access leading to it.

In the case of the newly annexed land being added to the Villages of Southern Oaks development, the already massive area will only grow. As of last year, the number of permitted houses jumped to 49,339 after the addition of 5,664 acres to the area. In addition, Southern Oaks permits the construction of condominiums and apartments, and by the end of construction, the area could double in size of The Villages, which has around 65,000 homes.
