I wonder if they have an Elvis impersonator club here in the Villages?

The irony is he is probably more popular and even worshiped than if he had lived. I have been to Graceland and describe it as almost a religious experience.

I had wanted to see Graceland but have not found the right opportunity yet.

Wow, died at age 42. 42 years ago. No one's been close to his combination of voice, looks, and presence.

Here is a video of him performing at the International Hotel in Las Vegas aka the Las Vegas Hilton. Note the back up singers the Sweet Inspirations, who were with him from '69 - '77.

Well as good as Elvis is there is no comparison to Geddy Lee.

He died like a king, on the throne.

Yes, I remember very well. I saw him in one of his first public performances in Germany - even my parents didn't like his "Rock'n Roll". I saw Graceland and his grave. I still like his songs and playing very often Elvis Radio.

I always felt he was over rated as an artist. He didn't write his songs and didn't really play any instrument, but he did have a great voice and stage presence. He certainly was a major player in the early years of rock and roll. He deserves his place in history, but maybe not as "The King". But I'm sure millions girls in the '50's would disagree with me. And maybe they're right.

True, but in the 50s very few songwriters also performed their songs. Listening to Hoagie Carmicheal or Irving Berlin sing was painful, for example. And, conversely, very few singers wrote their songs, Chuck Berry was an outlier. Singer/songwriters are a relatively recent phenomenon, and it seems that these days almost all artists do original songs.

In '62 when I was 12, Elvis was in the Crystal River area filming "Follow that Dream". My dad was a big Elvis fan and they had advertised that he was making a personal appearance at Weeki Wachee Springs (home of the Mermaid Show) that Saturday.

We drove 60 miles up Hwy 19 from St. Petersburg to Spring Hill and when were arrived about noon in front of the springs, they had cones blocking the entrances and signs saying the lot was full, do not enter. That was the closest we got to seeing him.
