Snake ID question
I was walking our dog and did not have my phone/camera. The snake was black with a red/orange horizontal stripe the entire length. It was a baby snake.

Possibly a garter snake, less likely but possibly a Florida red-bellied snake. The red-bellied snakes live more northerly than the Villages, from northern Florida to southern Georgia, and don't usually come out in the daytime. They also don't grow very big so if it was 12 inches or longer it would've been an adult. Garter snakes also don't grow very large. Neither of these two are poisonous or aggressive.

:)Could be a baby kingsnake. Red touching black on a snake usually means harmless. Don't quote me though:)
And now looking into it further, probably a ribbon snake (a type of garter snake). |

Thanks for the links. It did most closely resemble the Texas garter snake.

Dam I hate snakes. I have scuba dived with great white sharks and swam with alligators and only been a little scared. But snakes (and ticks) scare the life out of me. My favorite kind of snake is a dead one!
