Want to Adopt Non-Shedding Dog

I'll soon be looking to adopt my new best friend. I love all dogs, but I need to limit my options to a hypoallergenic, non-shedding dog. I also would like the dog to be young, and of medium-to-large size.

It's very easy to find a non-shedding pure-bred dog. But I assume finding one through the adoption process is not so simple.

Does anybody have any advice? I'd appreciate information regarding dog adoption in general, but naturally if the information relates to the needs I've mentioned, that would be even better.

Thanks.

Find a local animal shelter and ask if they have one of your specification "in stock"?

Maybe this: Dogs for Adoption Near The Villages, FL | Petfinder ?? Google can be your friend. :)

You're an angel Davonu. Thank you for going the adoption route. Many of the dogs we've fostered over the years that have been of "poodle mix" heritage have been non-shedding. We also have one now that we think is part Havenese and he doesn't shed at all even though he has long thick hair. Good luck in your search. Once you get the message out in the Rescue Community, I have a feeling your new best bud will be with you before you know it.

Be careful as non-shedding does not mean hypoallergenic.

We had a positive experience at Lake County Animal League off of Rt 33 just north of Groveland. It is a much nicer facility than some of the other local shelters. We adopted a 6 month old Havenese mix that does not shed at all. All shots were done by them as well as the microchip and spaying. We are very happy with our new "Riley", named because she has the life of Riley

If you want hypoallergenic, look for a Portuguese Water Dog or a Poodle in the medium size range. Mixes may or may not be but they should be nonshedding.

Now that labradoodles, etc. are “designer” dogs rather than mutts, they’re a bit harder to adopt but they are out there. Good luck in your search.

You need a Bichon Frise. Check them out.

If you find a Cavachon they would work for you. Cute and friendly.

Good for you wanting to adopt. You may have to keep checking the websites of various shelters. Two of our dogs came from South Lake Animal League (aka The Animal League). You have to be patient because they may not have the dog you are looking for at the moment, but you never know who they will be getting in next. The Animal League - Central Florida Humane Society And for anyone reading this, if you are a senior citizen and adopt a senior dog (my dog was 7 years old), you get a discount on the adoption fee. Good luck in your search.

Best dog I ever had was a Poodle Schnauzer mix. Non shedding, hypoallergenic, friendly, and super smart. She was a miniature, about 20 lbs.

I have been called a "son of a b**tch" and I don't shed. (I am not sure about the allergic part) Would you adopt me?

Are you toilet trained?

I am in the same boat as you – need a non-shedding/hypoallergenic dog. We arrived here in Mar 2019 but won’t adopt till we return from our October vacation. Adoption is right around the corner for us! In the meantime, I scour the sites below every few days to tantalize and torment myself.

Remember the advice from above, stated multiple times - no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. When we find our beloved, I will visit and rub my hands deep into its fur(hair), let the dog lick my inside forearm (the skin is more sensitive there), and, if I am brave enough, rub my eyes with my fingers to test my allergic reaction. We have been wonderfully successful in choosing our last 4 rescue dogs: each was a mini-schnauzer, although I believe the last one was actually a mix. They are delightful dogs!
