Paint Disposal

Where in Sumter County can you legaly drop off old paint for disposal

In conjunction with Marion County and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the County co-hosts an annual Amnesty Day (usually in the spring). This event provides an opportunity for residents and businesses of Sumter County to dispose of household hazardous waste. One year it is held in Wildwood, the next in Bushnell. This past spring it was in Wildwood.

If the paint is latex, just remove the paint can cover and let it dry out. When it's solid, you can dispose of the can with your regular trash. If it's oil based paint, then toxic waste disposal is necessary.

I just keep the stuff going to toxic waste in a location in my garage until disposal day. You might just want to call our utility company and ask them ...they might have a solution that doesn't involve keeping materials for about a year.

Habitat for humanity may take it off your hands for use in a home. Sometimes it will be used for primer.

Lady Lake has a place located South of the intersection of 466 and Rolling Acres Rd. From the intersection on 466 and Rolling Acres road go South on Rolling Acres Rd past the driving range about a mile or so and it is on the left or East side of the road. You will see signs both on 466 and on Rolling Acres a green recycle sign.

They are open every Tuesday and Saturday and you do not have to live in Lady Lake to deposit there and there is no cost. I was there with an old computer screen a couple of weeks ago and I have taken paint and oil there.

I didn't know that, thank you so much. I've always got stuff to be recycled.

Home Depot sells a product called "paint hardener". One packet will harden 2/3 of a gallon. Its good for oil and latex, just leave the cover off the paint can when disposing of it. Its legal in MA. so Im sure its legal in Fl. The EPA has ruled that oil and latex treated this way is not a threat to the water supply so most states are allowing it. It really does work.

Does anyone know whether this recycling location is still operating. I have paint cans, wood stain cans, spray paint cans, cement compound, etc. left by the previous owner of this house that I need to dispose of. I know that there is an annual event in the spring where Villagers can bring hazardous waste, however, I really want to dispose it now. :ohdear:

Drove by there this morning and there were still signs indicating where it is located. Hopefully that means it's still operational.
