Lithium Battery Conversion
 

Has anyone tried the Allied Lithium battery conversion kit? They replace six 8volt batteries with Four 12volt batteries. They are a direct conversion because they are the same size as the present batteries so you remove the old batteries and drop 4 of these in their place. They have built in battery control circuitry and can use your present charger. They weigh about 1/4 as much as your present batteries and will last over 10 years. Depending on the amp hour rating of the ones you buy, you can do the conversion for around $2K. and will go over 60 miles. What's not to like? I'm sick of buying lead acid that don't last and are heavy and require maintenance. These are the future of golf cart propulsion. Buying lead acid now, is like buying a rotary phone. What's the down side?

I would wonder about fires, safety, etc. Look at the questions being asked of Tesla recently. I'm all for high tech and drive a Chevy Volt. It has a lithium battery and I know the battery temperature control involved when charging is pretty sophisticated. You won't get 60 miles with the $2K conversion. I would go with the 60ah as a minimum.
Look at Trojan Trillium as well.

There is and ad on this site that sells a 60amp allied Kit for $2100. As more battery companies start selling conversions, the price will drop from there. I will buy a drop in conversion, I need to decide which one.

60ah might get you about 30 miles...that's about Rohan Rec to Mulberry Grove Rec and back.

That's great! 30 miles is more than enough. I wouldn't go 30 miles in a golf cart unless my car was broken. The way they are expanding TV these days, before long, your going to have to buy plane tickets to get from one end to the other.

You need 120AH to comfortably go 60 miles. I've built 2 lithium packs which are 110AH capacity packs but only around 85AH are actually useable. With this I get around 40 miles in the CC Precedent and more than 50 in the EZGO RXV. The RXV is about 20% more efficient due to the AC drive.

A 120AH commercial lithium pack should give you around 100AH of usable energy. Depending on your cart, tire size and driving style you can expect to see 45-70 miles.

I'm personally not a fan of Allied Batteries. I've emailed checking the batteries out for a friend and they seem to have some very special battery tech that no one else knows because it's proprietary. That they will not disclose the manufacturer of their lithium cells is distributing.

Also do not buy their Lithium Charger. There's nothing wrong with it, I'm even using 2 of them, other than its a cheap Chinese charger. You can buy same charger on Amazon or Ebay for $100-120 or order it from Allied for $295.

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the batteries just to many un-answered questions and too many big promises for me.

Just bought 16ea. 150ah LiFePO4 prismatics new for $1500. That's about 120ah usable.

Can anybody suggest a bullet-proof reliable BMS? I have a Lester Summit II charger.

Who is selling them for 2K? Is the warranty is writing or on sales page?

Do you recommend the Zeva BMS, or something else?

I used Zeva in my two carts because there was a good following, good info available and good customer support (from Australia). I have a friend in Orlando who's put together more than 25 Nissan Leaf packs and has been using a much cheaper BMS from China that uses a Bluetooth interface. As far as I know he's not had any issues so far. I'll probably try one of those on my next build.

I answered the BMS question in the other thread. Make sure that you reprogram your Lester Charger for lithium chemistry.

Yup...System and Battery profiles are programmable via Bluetooth in the Lester.

Just went thru your build post...Outstanding!

I made a 180ahr pack using the Orion Jr BMS. It is excellent and has lots of options in software. Designed for a 16 cell pack. Range is way more than I will ever need. Ac motor also helped make it a fun cart to drive. Way better than Yamaha stock!
