Careful. Get your approval so that you don't end up tearing it back up again, if someone doesn't like it.

I heard that a handicapped vet had his driveway widened by a foot or so to get his wheel chair out easier and he was ordered to undo the widening. He sold his house later, I almost bought it.

If you can not get approval try a sidewalk made from pavers.

As previously noted, contact ARC first with a sketch of what you want to do, no cost, takes about 2 weeks. Next, contact Sumter County streets department, yes you need to get approval from them if your widening project goes to the road. i know this from first hand experience. When you contact streets department, show them the ARC approval form, they will advise what else may be needed. There are 2 inspections typically, one after the excavation is done and one when rebar, etc., is placed.
A word of caution, there are contractors that will do the work and claim NO permits required, as noted above CHECK so you do not get caught.
Once you get referrals (from here or else where), check with BBB and Seniors against crime for any complaints. Make sure you get the form signed that any liens against your property have been removed before final payment.
Finially, call home warranty, and get the name of the original installer, and they may be interested in the project.
Hope this helps.
