Best Speedometer for Yamaha Cart
 

Looking to get a speedometer installed on my 2018 gas Yamaha. Anybody know a local installer who will come to my home and do this? Also, anybody have a suggestion as to what brand to install? Thanks!

I can't tell you what the best speedometer is, but I will tell you to avoid the bicycle type speedometers that are calibrated to fit the size of golf cart wheels. Those thing are useless to senior citizens that need cheaters to read the newspaper. Even during the daylight there is no way I can read one of those things, no less try to safely read it while driving a golf cart.

We, along with a lot of others, have a Trail Tech Striker. I can’t help you with suggestions for installers except for The Villages golf cart stores and you would need to take your cart to them.

There are also apps that you can use on your smart phone that will give you speed info. I have used GPS essentials, which has lots of options, including downloadable maps and google maps.

VT is right as usual! I have an old iPhone that I have loaded with a speedometer app and it works like a charm. You can also get an odometer app which comes in handy at times.

If you're not going over 20mph you don't need a speedometer. I have one but after five years of my cart going 25mph I dialed it back about 3 years ago because I felt it wasn't worth the risk. Not only the tickets but if you're in an accident will your insurance pay up if they know your cart is illegal. When the speedometer died, I didn't replace the battery since I can't go over 20 anymore. If you are going over 20, I would cool it on Bailey's Trail in the vicinity of Cane Garden, the radar cops have been out there a lot lately.

If you are going by or need to go by everybody else you are going to fast!!

:shrug: I've heard the need to pass others on the road is a compensation thing for being inadequate in another department. :ho:

Buy a Garmin GPS designed for a motorcycle and you will have a waterproof Gauge that is 100% accurate.

OP, sorry I did not mention that Garmin, I have these in each car and out "new" cart came with one from Villages discount Carts. As noted above these are very good. If you buy one look for Lifetime maps, usually a LM designation. These will allow you to update the maps on a quarterly basis at NO cost. I currently have 4 of these devices. I will have 3 used devices available shortly after Christmas, as we are upgrading.

Agree with previous post, save time and money and just download the speedometer app on your phone. Works great. Also, set your cart to 19.9 and forget about the speed. Lastly, not sure if this is true but the cart sales guy said Yahama can void your warranty if excessive speed is detected. Apparently there is a computer on board. It knows how fast you have been driving and for how many hours. Wow, someone is always watching these days !!

Many Yamaha golf carts have an hour meter - total engine runtime - useful information for scheduling maintenance. While it is possible that the maximum engine RPMs are stored somewhere, there isn't a speedometer unless an aftermarket one, such as a Striker, is installed. The Striker does record maximum speed, along with other statistics, until you reset it. I wouldn't necessarily believe a golf cart salesperson. One told me the Yamaha golf carts have 2 cylinder engines. Regarding using a GPS app on a phone, this is just what we need; people driving around with their attention focused on their phone.

Actually, now that you mention it, I would argue the phone is better then the speedometer. If mounted on the dash or in the drink holder, the numbers are huge, takes up the whole screen, you can glance at it in .01 seconds. The speedometers I have seen are a lot smaller. But then again, the bigger question is, if your not speeding, who cares how fast your going.
