The best, freshest grouper is outside the Villages at the Fisherman’s restaurant. Go west on hwy 44. It’s several miles on the other side of I-75 on the right side of the road. Don’t be put off by its appearance. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Cedar River Restaurant in Leesburg; next to Phillips Toyota at 8609 US-441, Leesburg, FL 34788; phone: (352) 728-3377 has it on the menu. My wife and I have been to the restaurant multiple times and have found the selections reasonably priced and well prepared.

You can get a great fresh grouper sandwich at Crackers in Crystal river and sit outside by
the bay and watch the boats go by.
While you are there you may want to go see the manatees at Kings Bay.

mtnest917 02-11-2020 09:11 AM

Stumpknockers in Dunnellon (off 200) features it as their signature dish. Excellent. They offer it fried, broiled or blackened. I love blackened.

leconomidy 02-11-2020 09:36 AM

Chatbrat 02-11-2020 11:28 AM

Grouper is often , not Grouper---lots of restaurants substitute way cheaper fish and mkt it as Grouper--9 restaurants in the Tampa area were cited for doing this--very hard to detect real Grouper--same goes for scallops

Madelaine Amee 02-11-2020 12:36 PM

I'd take a trip to the Keys and eat in the restaurant overlooking the bay in Key West and have the finest grouper anywhere. :icon_wink:

Call Robertos Italian restaurant in Pinellas Plaza, they had it on special last Saturday and it was exceptional.

Reminds me of "grouper-gate". A few years back the Tampa Bay Times penned an extensive, investigative report on how some area restaurants were serving tilapia in place of grouper. :a040:

I was going to post the same thing. Grouper is one of the most often substituted fish on menus. Almost as much as Red Snapper.

I have gotten several recommendations, but many were 30 minutes or more outside of TV. I am looking for a grouper sandwich in or close to TV.
