In spite of the facts, and like so many other things where facts show differently, a lot of people will still simply refuse to believe...that overall crime in America has went down in the last 25 years.

We may even hear from some of them...in this thread.

Nuttin' but da facts ma'am. (stick'em up here)

Quote:

5 facts about crime in the U.S.

1. Violent crime in the U.S. has fallen sharply over the past quarter century.

2. Property crime has declined significantly over the long term.

3. Public perceptions about crime in the U.S. often don’t align with the data.

4. There are large geographic variations in crime rates.

5. Most crimes are not reported to police, and most reported crimes are not solved.

Lady Lake. Lady Lake FL Crime Rate 1999-2018 | MacroTrends

and Fruitland Park. Fruitland Park FL Crime Rate 2005-2018 | MacroTrends

The fact is crime has not fallen everywhere in the US. Albuquerque NM Crime Rate 2003-2018 | MacroTrends

Stat #5 in your graphic seems to contradict stats #1 and #2 in the same graphic. In other words, in stats 1 and 2, there's unequivocal statements about certain types of crime happening at lower rates. And then comes stat 5:

Quote:

5. Most crimes are not reported to police, and most reported crimes are not solved. In its annual survey, BJS asks victims of crime whether they reported that crime to police. In 2018, only 43% of violent crimes tracked by BJS were reported to police. And in the much more common category of property crime, only about a third (34%) were reported. There are a variety of reasons crime might not be reported, including a feeling that police “would not or could not do anything to help” or that the crime is “a personal issue or too trivial to report,” according to BJS.

Victims do not bother to report many crimes that they used to report years ago. The police don't care, don't show or if they do show up they blow it off. At least that is what I hear from many crime victims. Also in many jurisdictions a de facto catch and release program is in effect. Few criminals end up spending time in the slammer anymore. It is a mess as crime pays these days.

Nope.

The same statement applies...to the entire 25 year period.

Or did you think that people only started not reporting crimes...just since 1993?

Nope. The Pew article you linked to explicitly - and solely - refers to the year 2018 in the #5 section. It says nothing about "the entire 25 year period" in that section about unreported crimes. I'm just referring to the text of the article you linked to. Now, could they have meant that unreported crimes are the norm, regardless of year? Sure. But that's not what was said there. The author used one year to show some stats. My point is that while any reduction in crime is a great thing, the fact (according to the article) that most crimes go unreported makes it problematic to ascertain exactly what's going on.

The big question is, were less unwanted babies being born the cause?
