Gov. DeSantis issues stay-at-home order for entire state of Florida | WEAR

ORLANDO, Fla. —
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that he will issue an executive order directing residents in the state to stay at home except for essential services starting at midnight Thursday.

The order will remain in effect for 30 days.

DeSantis issued a statewide stay-at-home order as federal and local pressure mounted for him to abandon the county-by-county approach he had implemented.

Coronavirus in Florida: The latest info
DeSantis told reporters Wednesday that he is issuing the order after consulting with President Donald Trump and White House advisers, who have said Americans need to stay home throughout April.

DeSantis' move came hours after the U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Jerome Adams, said on NBC's “Today” show that he would tell DeSantis that the federal guidelines for social distancing should be viewed as “a national stay-at-home order.”

The number of coronavirus cases in Florida will surpass 7,000 on Wednesday as the state’s death toll continues to climb.

State health officials said Wednesday that 87 Florida residents have now died after becoming infected with the virus and the state has a total of 6,955 cases.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Always wonder why does it take so much before there is something effective required? We saw what China etc had to do to get a hold on this virus. Now we will have to be inside for months instead of the 15 weeks which would have lasted till April 26th.

Grrrr...

Better late than never, though.

These are difficult decisions with lots of huge tradeoffs.

For example, and putting my 20/20 hindsight lenses on, how would it have worked had the government "ordered" a national lockdown in late February? Probably would have caused a revolt.

The health director for NYC, for example, was urging people to get out and about.

In a democracy, you can't make a big decision typically until most of the people see the reason for it.

NO MORE congregating at the squares or anywhere for that matter. Just wondering......is golf essential?

Park those golf carts and close the courses, they aren't necessary activities.

Bjeanj 04-01-2020 01:20 PM

There goes golf.

Fishing??

OK, golf and tennis are done... understandably.

But what about fishing?? Walking?? Bicycling?? Other outdoor activities that are solo endeavors?

Not essential (other than for peace of mind and exercise) but allowed or banned???

golfing eagles 04-01-2020 01:49 PM

Totally idiotic. He should have stuck to his guns and kept doing this county by county. There are counties with ZERO cases.

But further clarification is needed:

Bicycling?
Walking the dog?
hiking?

I don't see any reason to ban activities where social distancing can be maintained.

A giant thanks to all those that were clamoring to shut the state down or signed the petition to that effect. Looks like fear and panic outvoted common sense.

Even more idiotic---He intends to let those cruise ships with hundreds of positive people dock at Port Canaveral.
Lets let some more planeloads of people from NY/NJ land here while we sit at home doing nothing.

Chatbrat 04-01-2020 01:57 PM

people can't be relied upon to self discipline, especially in a senior citizen retired entitled community--best thing to snap some people into reality--the world doesn't resolve around your personal needs
