Speeders

Now that I am full timer it irritates me to see the idiots who think they need to drive 45 or more through TV. I haven't noticed many villagers doing it, though I am sure there are those that do. It seems that it's mostly contractors. I assume they are younger people aggravated about being behind us old geezers, but where in TV are they going to avoid that? If it weren't for us geezers they wouldn't have a place to be working anyhow. What do some of you think of getting together and taking down license plate numbers and truck numbers if possible and reporting them to their employers? Maybe it'll save someone from being mixed up in an unnecessary accident. Do you guys this is something we can do something about or has this all been tried before?

Y don't we hide ourselves in areas where these situations occur and just shoot them? It certainly will cut down on recidivism.

Hide and shoot

I like that idea.

Seriously, I seem to recall a few weeks ago that a contractor speeding on Canal St. caused an accident that could have been more serious than it was. My wife watched a contractor drive right through a gate coming from Buena Vista into Polo Ridge and tear the arm off. He didn't even slow down for the gate, so I assumed it to be intentional. Since I know it happened once I have to guess it happens quite frequently.

Is speeding a capitol offense?

You just touched the tip of the iceberg. I agree it is primarily contractors, but BV and Morse are worse than the Indianapolis 500 for the most part. As long as there is no enforcement such as I observe on 466,466A,Wildwood, Rolling Acres and others nothing will change. Speed limits are generally 10 MPH less than I was used to in Ohio, but that's probably a good thing, even if I don't care for it. I have seen some of the worse drivers here in Florida than any other place I've been and believe me not all are senior citizens.

Just check, it's the white hairs passing you. It's not always the younger folks.

Guess the Sumter County Sheriff's Dept has taken note and is doing some selective enforcement, as I saw them issuing tickets along Morse Blvd the past 2 days.

I have a receipt for $172 for a speeding ticket on 466A....don't tell me there is no enforcement!

The other day while standing out in front of our house Sunscape Truck came racing down our street, while he was talking on the phone. This is residential area and their are grand kids visiting in the area too. Not only did he do this the once he came back down few minutes later speeding recklessly by our house again while on the phone. My husband gestured to him to slow down but just blew by.

I didn't articulate my point, which was, there is no enforcement on Morse and BV. There is ample on 466a,466,301,Rolling Acres and the "off Villages" arena. Yes, as I'm on the south end, I know, you are absolutely right, 466A is closely watched. The later post indicated some enforcement activity in the villages area, so as stated maybe they have taken note.

I live at the North end of Morse Blvd, North of 466 and the speed limit is 30mph on Morse. Rarely is there a time when I am on "North" Morse and do NOT see a law enforcement vehicle. People still speed, but those that live here are more careful, though it is hard to keep the speed to 30.

Ever since we started this forum three years ago, I have been an advocate of some type of police department in The Villages. (there is a fire department) There has been consistant resistance to that idea by many board members. They have said they don't want to incur the expense associated with local law enforcement.

With the size of The Villages constantly increasing along with legitmate concerns such as this one, I still maintain that some type of law enforecment is in order. Even if it is some form of security force. I suppose since The Villages is not a governmental subdivision, they aren't permitted to have a police department per se.

I have been to many private communities that have "armed" security on patrol 24/7. One example is Fripp Island near Beaufort, South Carolina.

The three Sheriff's patrols are not adequately equipped to provide consistant, specialized enforcement in The Villages.

Another idea would be to contract with the three Sheriff's departments to have cars assisgned inside the Villages all the time. We did that with many smaller communites when I was a deputy in Ohio. Los Angeles County contracts deputies to cities that don't have their own force. These deputy patrols would work inside the Villages only, but be on call for emergency assistance outside if needed.

I would have also called Sunscape and asked to speak to the owner or manager and tell them of the incident. I don't really think they would want an employee to represent the company in that manner.

We also should have Canal Street renamed to "Race Track Road" because that is what it has become.

speeding

do not see much of a problem speeding.seems there are lots of police out there now to catch them. lots of speed traps in the villages.seems they are doing their job.
