"Stimulus Check" for my deceased father.

My widower father passed away in March 2018 but I did file his final 2018 tax return for him and it was marked deceased and his SS immediately stopped. Today I got a stimulus check for him with his name c/o my name & address. I understand that this happens and I did shred it but right next to his name on the check it says DECEASED (actually DECD) so they KNOW he's in tax free living now. That's the part I can't understand because any 1st year programmer could easily have added "if account marked DECEASED do not send check." I wonder how many of these get cashed. Admittedly I was tempted after reading a lot of legal posts about this online but I felt the gov't needed it more than me so it got shredded. :D :D The Trumpster and his Mnyuchin says "we'll get the money back" so I'm sure they would have paid me a visit. ;)

Great, thousands out of work can’t get the check and they are sending them out to the deceased. On par with any federal ran program I see.

If he was alive when they approved the payments, I would think the estate is still entitled to the money.

Stimulus mis-check

I read that a woman in England -- a British citizen -- got a check. Maybe she had earned income in the US at some point and filed. Even so, it's clear the system has flaws. I imagine some government operations are short-staffed, and this may have an effect. Also, due to the vacancies, some GS15s may have to fill in and have no clue how to do the grunt work.:D

I think the answer is that although you have many skilled employees not all employees have the needed skills for the tasks assigned . Normal testing and review of the software was probably not possible but I could see errors happening in the best of times. The states problem with unemployment should give you an idea as to there ability to compete with the private industry who would be out of business if they did the same.

People were demanding something be done NOW so they did something NOW. When you rush developing and executing a plan errors happen, sometimes big errors. Now all the critics can gleefully beat the drum on how incompetent the government is.

I still haven't gotten my stimulus check yet. But the website still says I'm eligible and the money will be deposited into my account ending in (....) when the funds are released, and that the webpage I"m looking at will change to reflect the deposit.

Maybe by the time it comes I won't actually need it anymore.

As my original post stated he passed away in MARCH OF 2018 so I would assume he wasn't entitled to the money.

I agree but his check was marked DECEASED. DECEASED are not supposed to get checks. It's not like he passed away a month or 2 ago and the gov't records updates were still in limbo it's been close to 2.5 YEARS.

Edit: Can you imagine the financial loss if every deceased person who died sometime in 2018 (had a 2018 tax form filed) got a $1200 check? It seems likely that is what could have happened because it makes no sense they just randomly in error chose him.

The above quote is absolutely right! The Federal Government has not had to make a payment like this in over 10 years and has to send out tens of millions of unusual payments at warp speed. If the lamestream media finds one instance of a late/missing payment, they are ready to villify all concerned.

When has the govt ever efficiently spent our money?

davem4616 05-02-2020 05:53 AM

I get that the government was under pressure to act quickly, however even with the need to move with alacrity someone should have defined the business rules for generating checks and verified that they were incorporated into the system.

I've consulted with the NSA, DOD, EPA and will tell you that the folks in the higher levels are really bright and on the ball...but many of the 'worker-bees' under them are just going through the motions and know that they have a job for life no matter what they do / don't do.

I read someplace where the government is not going to bother going after these, so perhaps many people will find a way to cash them and do so.

I agree with you about the incompetence of our government.
