As an essential resource to the Sumter and surrounding communities, YOUR Humane Society SPCA has been proudly helping animals and their people for 38 years. Thursday, May 14th, marks their 38th year of service as Sumter County’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter honoring their mission to protect animals through many programs such as free pet food, humane education, disaster preparation, spay/neuter assistance, adoptions and more. They are hosting a “$38 for 38 Years” Birthday Blast with a goal of $5000. Local business owner, Robin Gump, of Mid-Florida Agencies Florida Blue Medicare (Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medical Insurance for Belleview, Eustis, Ocala) became an Animal Rescue Ranger top-tiered partner in support of the shelter in 2020. She is putting a challenge out to her clients and business colleagues by contributing $1000 to start the lifesaving celebration on behalf of her dog Bendel’s 1st birthday as well as a tribute to honor the memory of her beloved 16-year-old ShihTzu Tobianne!

From the shelter’s early years, as a small volunteer-based rescue providing spay/neuter vouchers and achieving a few dozen pet adoptions annually to now operating a five acre shelter in central Sumter County, thousands of animals and people have benefited from our humane education, adoptions and public assistance programs. Our steady growth and achievements are a reflection of the community’s support of their mission. Shelter Chairman, Claudia Labbé explained, “We are where we are today because a network of local compassionate citizens began with a unified goal based on a great need they saw 38 years ago. As the word steadily spread and the impact became visible, more people got involved to honor that mission. Due to my love of animals, I got involved in order to make my community a better place to live not just for animals but also for people. It is an organization I am very proud to be a part of as one link in the chain of many caring people. I encourage anyone who wants to make a difference to be a part of this rewarding work. We always achieve more together.”

The pandemic has forced the shelter to cancel all in-person fundraisers and adoption events. Virtual events such as this are now critical in keeping the shelter’s lifesaving work moving forward.
