Shelving
 

We are new to the villages (Feb 2020) and it is time to organize storage in our garage.

We are from up north (NYC and than Va) and would ordinarily purchase steel shelving but due to the heat wondering if we should purchase ventilated shelving.

Wondering about pros and cons.

I would highly recommend the Container Store Elfa shelving system for a garage. Very easy to install (ventilated or not) and totally flexible and changeable in design. You just install a track on the wall near the ceiling and hang the shelves on the track. But, it is not cheap.

I have Husky (Home Depot) steel cabinets lifetime warranty in our garage for over 6 years so far, and they work great.

Understand the shelving part but what is the point of the doors? Seems like it will be harder to find the tools I will put on new shelves.

I have a working garage, this means lots of dust, etc., so doors were a requirement. I originally put post-it notes on the cabinets so i knew which ones had what tools, I now no longer need the post-it notes.

It is too hot to stay in there so just need a storage space for my stuff. Wondering what consistent hot shelves will do to cartons and plastic stuff.

That is why I am thinking plastic might be better but hopefully others will say what they have done..

15 years ago, I put white large closets at the front of the garage for storage, and then wire shelving on the sides. Over the years the shelving looked “messy”. Last year, I put three more Full sized white cupboards on one side of the garage And two more along the other side and got rid of the metal shelving. I LOVE IT, and wished i had done that years ago. So much neater, easier to store and find and much cleaner look in my garage now.

We have white cupboards with doors and lots of shelves. No, problem with heat. And everything looks neat.

Put whatever you feel it works
 

I have a menagerie of storage in our Oversized garage, all is solid, and some is metal, some is other material, i also have plastic tubs on some to storage wife’s household items, no problem with it. Get what works for you and ENJOY the lifestyle here which is the BEST in the U.S. God bless America

Closets Shelving
 

When we moved in we did two things that made me happy. We had someone come in and do a California Closets on all the closets. Then had them place the wire racks that took down and mounted them in the garage.

We have shelving which is open top and bottom.

Don’t know what you mean by steel vs ventilated shelving. But I’ve installed the heavier weight wire shelving available at Hone Depot or Lowes in both closets and the garage. It’s the style with slotted vertical components that hang from a horizontal steel component across the top. Various lengths of shelving supports lock into slots in the vertical parts and the wire shelving rests/locks on to those shelf supports.

This shelving supports a huge amount of weight. It requires either anchors or concrete screws to fasten the weight-bearing horizontal component across the top. The vertical components can be fastened to the wall with “regular” screws.

Make sure you don’t make your garage to narrow by putting shelving on both sides. You don’t want be banging you car doors on things when you get in or out of your car.

I used Closets by Design, and was VERY disappointed. Wouldn't use again!
