Kohler Toilet Flush Canister Twisting
 

This subject was covered in an earlier, closed thread but I’m certain that it’s still relevant to many homeowners in TV. When you flush a Kohler toilet with the canister type flush valve, the canister twists and does not seat properly. It’s been suggested that replacing the gasket with the yellow Kohler genuine part GP1059291 Canister Seal $6.90 on Amazon or any of the big box stores might fix the problem.

Well I tried it and one month later can tell you that it does fix this problem. Why? I suspect that the new rubber seal prevents slippage that allowed the canister to twist. There’s no other explanation. But many thanks to the earlier contributors on this site who shared the fix. It was a very annoying issue.

The existing red gasket deteriorates and allows leakage.

I added a little weight to the canister and it seats very well. I've not had to change the gasket for over three years

Although the new seal solved the problem, it’s still a mystery to me why. Adding additional weight to the canister is logical, unless the new seal coincidentally added just enough weight. My wife says who cares why, but I am still curious.

If the gasket is dirty or corroded, it doesn't form a water tight seal at the bottom of the canister. In that case, the flowing water during flushing will move and twist the canister out of place.

Don’t put any cleaning agents dispenser’s in the top tank, they erode the seals and hardware.
