Sounds scary doesn't it? But it's a flat out lie meant to scare you. Panic Porn

That's the headline the Orlando Sentinel went with today, and they opened the story with this.

Florida reported 120 new COVID-19 fatalities on Thursday — the single biggest daily increase — pushing the death toll past 4,000 and coming after weeks of exploding coronavirus cases across the state.

Here is the graph they presented charting Florida deaths.

Wow...very scary, deaths are rising must be that surge of new cases.

The problem with the Sentinel's headline and chart is there were only 9 deaths from covid 19 on Thursday. The rest of the 120 deaths were from previous dates and to make a correct chart you have to backfill reported deaths to the date they actually happened. I am pretty sure they know this but 120 deaths in a single day just makes for great panic porn headlines.

Here is a correct chart with deaths listed on the actual day they happened.

So far total of 135 deaths in July for Florida. This number will rise as deaths by actual date are backfilled. It takes time for deaths to be coded at hospitals, sent to the county, then the State and CDC.

It's unfortunate that we can't trust media reports on just about anything.

The media cannot be trusted to deliver news because it’s no longer their job. Their job is to sell advertising. By keeping us in fear and divided they hav determined that we will watch, listen or read more news thereby increasing their ad revenue

You are misunderstanding the data records and you have your fake news supporters agreeing.

Then please enlighten us instead of shooting spitballs from the sidelines. The OP's comments were legit.

p.s.-- the real "fake news supporters" are those who believe the lies... like you

Wow! Wonder why China has only 2 cases today? Do they just shoot anyone positive and not count it as death caused by Covid?

Your correct. I follow the medical professionals and scientific data closely from multiple sources and, I 100% know that the Covid 19 is NOT A HOAX, IT IS NOT GOING AWAY SOON and people are dying because they are not following the CDC guidelines.

Scaring the bejesus out of me by reading articles like this and watching patients and staff struggle with treating the disease keeps me from letting my guard down and becoming too complacent and comfortable while out in the world. My worst nightmare would be to wake up in the ICU about to be intubated. I watched a family member go through intubation some years back and it ain’t pretty at all. For me, anyway, this is real and I’d rather err on the side of caution and find out it’s a hoax than to be loosey goosey with my lifestyle and end up finding out it’s real by being told That my SPO2 is dangerous low and that I need to be put in an induced coma while I’m on life support to help me breathe.

I totally agree. I have a friend that works in the hospital and that were told no matter what if a person dies that in any likeness to the virus that they are category as covid 19 because that way the hospital gets $13,000 a death that is caused by the virus. SAD

I guess I don't understand the focus on death dates. The dead are dead regardless of the date. They dies of COVID. Does saying the data is older make the deaths any less significant? People need to treat the virus as a potentially fatal infection and start doing the things necessary to stop it.

Dates DO MATTER. By screwing with the dates, they make it appear that there were 120 new deaths on Thursday. That is false information. On Thursday, they reported 120 deaths (that happened over the previous weeks). Reporting them on Thursday is not the same as them happening on Thursday. The headline is designed to mislead the reader. That was the point of the OP.

That's the same as writing: "On Thursday, the NHTSA reported 27,525 automobile deaths". Well, that's a lot of accidents on Thursday ... until you do some research and find that they are reporting a total for the year to date.

Annie66 07-11-2020 05:51 AM

You don't have to trust the news if that is your political slant, but a death is a death is a death. You cannot call that fake news.
According to the FL Covid web site, we had 11,385 reported new cases and 93 new deaths yesterday. Those are real tragedies for families and not just numbers. So you can poo-poo the media reporting but if it leads you to disbelieving the seriousness of this pandemic, then just wait. You'll no doubt become personally enveloped in the crisis, whether as a Typhoid Mary spreader or a victim, and thus one of the statistics.
