Makes a huge difference in the quality of the cut; I sharpen mine and wipe it down with alcohol before every mowing.

I sharpen my own also, just be careful to keep the weight evenly distributed and the blades balanced. Once they become out of balance the spindle bearings will quickly go. I sharpen the blades a few times and then replace them. Much cheaper to replace the blades than the spindles. Mow on my friend : )
