Covid 19 Survives Freezing temperatures?

If this article is accurate and the virus doesn't die in freezing temps. Pray a vaccine is discovered soon.

Say it ain't so. That's definitely not a good thing and more than a little concerning.

Covid 19 Survives Freezing temperatures?

So do humans if they take care of themselves.

As viruses are not really alive you shouldn't be surprised that they are not inactivated by freezing. In fact viral samples are often frozen for storage. Live viral vaccines such as the MMR, ChickenPox, and oral Polio are all shipped frozen and must be stored at the doctor's office in a medical freezer to preserve their infectivity. RNA viruses are often stored at minus 80 Celsius. [-112 F]

Virus’ are very resilient and change we may develop virals to help slow the spread HIV is still around it is not over yet.

Another reason why I still wash/disinfect anything and everything that comes in the house. Hubby continues to be just as vulnerable as before.

Big whoop. It was found on the packaging. If you tested every package surface at your local Publix or Walmart they could probably find some coronavirus on that as well. If it is on the food itself, CDC states there is no evidence that this vector has infected anyone.

Wash your hands after shopping. Wash packages too if you want.

So, I am not saying that viruses are not really alive as you claim. But answer me this, how does hand sanitizer supposedly kill the virus that has invaded your hands from touching a contaminated surface? If the virus is not alive, how is it killed?

Problem about washing hands, can’t guarantee that we will always remember to wash after touching something, getting blueberries out of fridge etc.
As far as CDC ... there is a small chance... I’m trying to bring the probability closer to zero. It’s not much problem to disinfect and now it’s a habit.

The virus is not "alive" and so it is not killed, it can be deactivated with alcohol or by washing with soap and clean water.
The virus is covered with a fatty envelope that allows it to attach to surfaces. The“Soap molecules can pry themselves into the fatty layer of this particular virus and break it up, thus inactivating the virus.” for more specifics, see:Coronavirus: Why soap works better than hand sanitizer - UCHealth Today

Thanks for the informative response. I am still not sure if there is a need to make a difference between killing and deactivating the virus. As long as the nasty stuff is put into a state where it can not be infectious I guess one can use whatever term makes them feel good?

That is nothing new. I’ve read from the beginning of this pandemic to clean your food before putting in refrigerator or freezer because it has been shown that the virus does not die (or you can say the virus continues to be present if you want to be technical) when chilled or frozen. Which is why even though they tell us now that surfaces is not the usual route for the virus, I continue to clean all my foods, especially if going into the freezer. “Not usual route” does not mean impossible.

tsmall22204 08-14-2020 06:04 AM

You worry about surface contamination and walk around with no mask. You question hand sanitizer and you walk around with no mask. REALLY!!!!

We don’t pray about the common cold or the flu so why would I pray about this? 95% of the people that get this it don’t know they have it or have mild symptoms. It’s 99% plus survivable the same as the flu. The media has done a great job of turning many otherwise intelligent people into paranoid idiots

algi45 08-14-2020 06:22 AM

Th alcohol denatures (destroys) the virus chemically.
