Bermuda grass in my Zoysa
 

Anyone had any luck killing the bermuda without killing the zoysa?

If I am not mistaken, you can't. Bermuda is invasive. The only way to kill it would be to re-sod the area where it is and keep the sod healthy or it'll rear its ugly head again. You can dig it up and hope your Zoysia will spread out and take over, but the bermuda will come back much faster and as you try to remove the bermuda you will also be removing any of the Zoysia that may have spread.

I used to grow the stuff on purpose for hay. We paid to have a field sprigged with Tift 44 bermuda. They put 3000 sprigs on a 12 acre field and by the end of summer it was covered with it. It grows and spreads faster than the grasses used for sod. It makes great hay for cattle and horses.

i got same deal but with st. augstine. patch in front yard has st. augustine growing in it.. UUGGGHHHH

I also have the same problem. Guess it is spreading all over.

Since it did not happen to me personally I can only pass this along - a neighbor had Bahia in his St Augustine. Bates or whoever his weed guy is told him that whoever mows his yard probably mows a Bahia yard first and when he mows the St Augustine yard the seeds and droppings from the Bahia get into his grass and start growing.

I did notice that my lawn service has two mowers. I wonder if one is for Bahia and one is for St Augustine. I will probably ask one day.

That is why I do my own yard. Good Friend has a lawn service. He has 2 or 3 mowers but they are mainly for back ups or if he is really busy his wife helps him. but they do not seperate the mowers by yards. Really bag for st. augustine if one yards has cinch bugs he does the next one, helps spread them. Still with that said, I do my own, my mower has only been in our yard and still we have St. Augustine growing in our Zoysia. Big patch of it. I was told to either sit out there and hand pick it out little at a time or have it dug out and put new sod in.

Instead of digging it out, why not use roundup on it , then reseed?

Just had the lawn folks I contracted with make their first visit. I asked about the Bermuda as to what does it mean if I just leave it alone, and this was the response:

"Bermuda will grow a little faster than Zoysa so for the few days before the next mowing, it will be a few inches taller than the Zoysa."

If that is my only worry, I am not going to fret no mo.

Lou - The post I made earlier pretty much said to do that. It said, down in the link, that if you don't do anything, the zoysia will overpower the bermuda.

I am going to go with the LET IT GROW. I was told by a landscaper that OMG you have the creeping crud bermuda coming in. More research says SO WHAT.

At least it's green, right?

Sorry to say even with Round up you will never get rid of Bermuda Grass. You will kill the top but it will come up from the roots.

You know all the golf courses use Bermuda. Just learn to live for it.

To get rid of it you have to go down 6-8 inches but you will never get it all.

Honest landscapers will tell you the truth. Other will just take your money to get the job
