Excellent ALTERNATIVE to GOOGLE SEARCH

Nothing against Google et al - we both use Google Chromebook laptops (also have a Windows & Apple).

I tend to use the GOOGLE search engine about 10 times per day - for various reasons. Lately I have found some Google search results to be quite 'partisan' and somewhat biased. Esp for news, articles, and current events topics.

So I researched other SEARCH ENGINES and came upon alternatives. Checked out DUCKDUCKGO. Used last 3 days and find it to be very fair impartial "results", quick, and displays (esp videos and images) nicely.

Another very good reason to use the above recommended search engine is because they don’t sell your search results to third party firms to be used for targeted marketing purposes.

'impartial' meaning they don't seem to be filtered with algorithyms based upon political stance. It's well known that Google, Amazon, Yahoo, Twitter - and many others on the 'coast' apply them. Easy to see with some results, esp news. I am Independent and like 'all sides'. Even if I may not "agree with them". Freedom of thought, expression, and Press. period.

Thanks for sharing, I'll try it....even though I don't let the "left coast" tech companies cloud my common sense and power of reasoning....:icon_wink:

Have used DuckDuckGo for a couple of years and love it. I use Google sometimes but use DuckDuckGo 95 percent of the time. To me it is more efficient.

I use BING but will try duckduckgo also. Thanks

Google includes results based on popularity of searches. If "most people who use Google" click on "this website dot com" to find information about "this topic," then it will show up #1 on the list when you search for "this topic." It will filter out certain things, such as XXX porn sites that have added tags and hashmarks expressly to get on that list. Or it might filter out things that Google has previously marked as illegal, such as warez sites and Nigerian scams. Mostly though it just tags those results with a "warning - this might be a compromised site" or some other such wording. Your own preferences will determine which things get filtered out, more or less. Most of it is entirely in your control, you just have to be pro-active.

It's not an agenda, it's just how the math works.

DuckDuckGo is very useful.

Bing is loaded with nonsense, used mostly by people who don't understand how search engines work, and will copy a search RESULTS link, thinking that it's a link to a specific result. Or they'll believe that every link on that search result is reliable and truthful - again, because they have no idea how search engines work.

Such a broad brush you use to disparage others! As a Bing user I can attest to the fact that your opinion is just that and is not a fact!

It's quite true that Google can be partisan as well as 90% how the media papers and TV stations. DuckDuckGo also has the advantage of keeping all of your searches private. The other way you can use Google and Chrome his to logout of your Gmail account and create another one. But don't use the new one for email. Google basically collects all the information about your emails and your search patterns to give you the results you generally want. In other words it's a shelf replicating system a feedback give you positive results that you want and like. Very similar to YouTube suggesting movies or videos similar to what you just watched. There is other other small search engines as well are you can explore

Thanks. I’ve just downloaded the App to give it a try. I’ve seen it praised a number of times in Consumer Reports, but I’d never tried it. So far as I can tell with five minutes of use, one big difference is that instead of having a tool bar across the top with tabs for everything I’ve looked at and left but not closed, there’s a little box at bottom right of the screen with numbers in it for each open tab. I click on that and get a list of what is open. That will take a bit of getting used to.

Thanks for the info- I am going to give it a try!

I've been using DuckDuckGo for a couple of years now and am quite satisfied with it. I dislike the idea of Google tracking my every search.

Diane Allen 09-01-2020 06:29 AM

We have been using DuckDuckGo for years and like it.
