Hot Water Heater Replacement
 

Looking to replace my 40gal gas water heater. (Short model .. only 125# or so.)
Firstly this is something I could do myself , and would obviously pull a permit, but I could use a little “muscle” to move it onto that little shelf in the garage.
I would gladly pay for a little bit of help .... located north of Spanish Springs in Santiago area.

Otherwise , can anyone recommend a reasonable plumber to install this?

FIRST.....CHECK with you nat-gas provider....they may have a deal with rebates etc......

Last year you could get a 40 gal nat gas water heater for $ 600...... ALL IN.... including install,
removal and all needed misc.....

You could even opt to pay $ TEN DOLLARS a month
for 60 months at ZERO interest ....they just add the ten bucks to your monthly bill.
EASY-EASY ....they would even arrange for the contractor to get it done....

I opted for a $ 350 rebate instead of the $ 10 per month plan. ..
.Paid the same 600. net price..
. I was just too set in my ways to take the ten buck deal.

Be aware that gas co. has Patricks plumbing as a provider. The water heater has only a 5 year warranty, so they keep replacing it and make $600 every 5 years.

What about replacing an electric HWH. Who is the best plumber and what is the cost?

Used Mike Scott Plumbing. Reasonable and good workmanship. Quoted us $800 for a new heater.

Well I appreciate all replies so far. Seems all contractors want around $900 just for installation.... amazing for just a 1 to 2 hour job.

To do the job correctly, you need to install an expansion tank above the water heater. Some older houses do not currently have one because they were built before the building code required them. If you don't have one, there would be some additional piping work required. The expansion tank will stabilize the water pressure in your house, and prevent damage to your water heater and all other plumbing fixtures in your house.

We used Mike Scott about $800 then there was a rebate from Teco Gas. $800 is not inexpensive but it beat the $1000 plus I paid at our home in New England. And the expansion tank is now required, that adds to the cost.

Yes, make sure you compare apples to apples when reviewing installation prices. Some plumbers will not include an expansion tank if the existing water heater doesn't have one. They will call the job a "repair" instead of a "replacement" and claim that the code doesn't apply to repairs. I think it is a gray area in the building code. But, I would recommend the expansion tank.

Electric HWH IMO are easy to replace, cheaper, and safer IMO. I considered having 220 line ran and changing to electric.

The gas company will install one for free. Then they will just add $10.00 to your bill for five years interest free. That's what we did. No brainer!

:) The "no brainer' for me was an energy efficient 40 gal. water heater with elect. ignition and flue damper that I paid $421 for and then received a $400.00 rebate check from TECO for buying. (replacing gas with energy efficient gas) :icon_wink:
