Homestead Exemption
 

Where do I go to apply for the Homestead Exemption? Is there a certain time period to apply or should I go as soon as I get there in September? When does it become effective?

You must be actually living in your home on January 1st. You can apply for homestead exemption between January 1st and March 31st. You will go to the Sheriff's annex, on 466 - the Tax collector's office is on the back side of the building. Also, when you go and, if you are 65, be sure to apply for the Senior exemption. Take a copy (of what would be 2010 tax returns - if they are done - if not, you will have until June 1st to provide it) - this will let you know if you are eligible for the added $25,000 exemption. (That added exemption is actually based on income). Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.....very helpful! I called the Sumter Appraiser's Annex and the woman I spoke with said I could get my car registered there and then apply for Homestead Exemption. You have to have a FL driver's license and your car must be registered in FL. I have to get the license at the DMV. She was very nice and very helpful, like everyone is in The Villages!!!

One thing to remember is that if you have a homestead exemption on another home you will not be able to claim it here.
We had one on our other home in Indiana and had to remove it in order to claim the one here.
Veterans that have a disability can also file for the veterans exemption.

:blahblahblah:Getting a license is very difficult because of the Homeland security changes. We have been trying for two weeks. I need a birth certificate, my marriage certificate (only for women because we changed from our birthname) my social security card and my current license. This has been a hassel. Then it costs $419.00 to register your car and I think 50.00 for the license. :grumpy:

I used my passport to get a FL driver's license. Much easier! Used a 1099 form for soc sec number, since name on ssn card didn't match. No problems there. Takes a couple of weeks to get a passport, but I thought it was easier than digging through everything for old records....

I have a current passport, social security card and my birth certificate, however, I am divorced but retained my married name, so name is not the same as birth certificate. I hope this is not going to be a problem. I don't have marriage certificate.

kit9240, we went to the License Office in Wildwood to get our drivers license. If you have a passport you won't need the marriage license or birth certificate. You will need two different documents showing your current Florida address. They will accept utility bills, closing papers, an insurance card, etc.

The process is easier than a trip to the dentist!

Howard, thanks for the info! I have all the paperwork in order so I don't anticipate any problems. I was told to bring 'a lot of money' to register my car.
