White mold on outdoor plants
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of white mold on outdoor potted plants. I have the plant in a half whiskey barrel and have gone from watering everyday (rainy season) to watering every two three days. But it does not seem to want to go away, even in bright sunlight.
Any ideas or home remedies? Jerry Jackson (SABRMnLgs@AOL.com) |
might not be mold--we have had "white" stuff on our hibiscus--Massey Lawn said it was mealy bugs and they have sprayed for them.

White "mold"
Is it a hard deposit? Could be mineral deposits, 'specially if you've been fertilizing it.

Powdery mildew
It might also be powdery mildew - it is a problem with a lot of plants in humid weather and goodness knows it can get humid in Florida in the summer! :icon_wink:
Here's a link that describes it: http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/she...erymildew.html Here's one for mealy bugs: http://www.mrec.ifas.ufl.edu/lso/mealybugs.htm Check to see which you have and good luck! I've found mealy bugs much easier to treat than powdery mildew... |
Take a close look at the white stuff on the upper leaves. I the white stuff has little legs and is moving, you got mealy bugs and aphids.

The white stuff with little legs remedy that seems to work is a mixture of Dawn dish soap and water sprayed on. Don't want to take business away from the folks that get good money to treat these things but this appears to be a good remedy.

The old-timers spray tobacco juice as an insecticide and to combate the white mold on Florida's non-vegetable plants. One recipe includes the Dawn dish soap with the tobacco juice. Just use one gallon of water and one cup of tobacco leaves (pouch tobacco, cigerettes or the chewless type) and let sit for at least 24 hours. When the water takes on a brown color, put in a spray bottle and spray you plants. http://www.essortment.com/all/homemadeorgani_renu.htm |
Last year I had scale - white stuff that clung to the leaves. We have lots of oleander and it was covered with scale. Several other plants had it too. I made a solution of oil, soap and water and washed it off of a few of the smaller plants. The prevention is to spray with horticultural oil in the spring. That worked this year. I
