Tiger recovery thoughts
 

Alex Smith, the Washington Football Club QB, also had a devastating leg injury. Have there been news reports comparing the two? Whose is worse? Smith came back.
Unlike Smith, golfers with rebuilt legs don't usually get tackled. On the other hand (leg), Smith doesn't have to walk five miles when he plays.

Alex Smith is another average quarterback out of thousands who have played the game. Tiger Woods is either the greatest or second greatest golf who has ever lived.

Tiger was also a forced that changed the game and changed society. Because of Tiger, golf became cool for young people. Blacks swarmed to the game in record numbers because of this man.

Also golf is a worldwide sport. Tiger has affected the lives of people all around the world. I'm sure that Alex Smith does his share for charities around the Washington area but that can't be compared to what Tiger has accomplished with his TGR Foundation.

Tiger Woods may be the most well known athlete on the planet.

I'm feel for Alex Smith and wish him the best, but to compare him to Tiger Woods is absurd.

Let's not forget Ben Hogan. In 1949, at the age of 36 he and his wife were in a head on collision with a Greyhound Bus. Double fracture of his pelvis, broken left ankle, broken rib and blood clots. Doctors didn't think he would ever walk again much less play competitive golf. His 1953 season was one for the record books. Considering the stage of medical and rehabilitation in 1949 I think Tiger will be just fine.

Comparing their injuries is not the same thing as comparing their impact on the game...

The comparison is they both had terrible injuries. Alex Smith fought back from a horrible injury and time will tell if Tiger can do the same.

Tiger Woods had an extraordinary physical talent to play golf but a flawed moral compass like OJ. That is the real tragedy. Hogan, Snead, Palmer and Nicklaus etc. had as great an impact on golf as Tiger. Hope he recovers quickly but this fawning adoration is nauseating. Anyone who recovers from a serious injury with hard work and therapy is to be respected whether they are rich or poor.

Amen, John41. Tiger's dour demeanor on the course, his volatile temper and seeming sense of entitlement between the ropes has also had its impact on the young golfers he's influenced...it hasn't all been positive, not remotely. Karma has been quite a harsh mistress for him these past 10 years or so. Having said all that, I wish him well at this difficult time and hope he can get back to playing competitive golf again. It would be cool to see him continue to evolve as a father and his son looks like a real good player already. How about caddy Tiger to his son, on the PGA tour in about 10 more years? I'd love it!

His bones will heal. A lot will depend on the extent of damage to his joints and soft tissue.

I think Nicklaus has made statements that disagree with you.

For what it's worth, a sports orthopedics expert said Tiger's injury will be more difficult to come back from than the QBs. Woods' ankle was crushed. This was the question of this thread before some posters detoured the discussion to morality opinions.
Try walking a mile with an ankle sprain. Now imagine trying to walk five miles every day with an ankle held together with bolts and duct tape. Perhaps we'll see him on the senior tour in a few years.

Currently rooting for Westwood, a gentleman. As to woods, his drama and ills are self inflicted.
My heroes are Hogan, a veteran and self made man, along with Venturi, remember him climbing the 18th basically dead on his feet....

I don't underestimate the severity of what Tiger is dealing with. Years ago, my husband broke, but did not crush, every bone in both of his feet, including heels and ankles. He was lucky that he did not require surgery and that he only had to be in casts and a wheelchair for some months. I agree that Tiger's ankle being crushed and all of the screws and rods used to put him back together are going to complicate things for him. It sounds as though he may have injured only one leg which is a blessing. Not being able to bear weight on either foot is...challenging.

My husband was able to make a complete recovery and I'm hoping the same holds true for Tiger. Tiger is young so I hope that he heals well and winds up with good results.
