Fire Protection Assessment (tripling?)

Does that support the fire department and other emergency services like EMT's or is it for "fire protection" like from forest fires (sorta kidding on that).

Just got a letter in the mail from SC Tax folks saying they're proposing an almost tripling of that assessment on this property from my current $125 to $360 for 2021/22. Public hearing on 4/13 at Everglades RC. Does it vary by property valuation? Actually it says: "only the maximum fire protection assessment" whatever that means will be affected.

We also got it today and wondering what it actually will mean.

Trial balloon testing the metal of the silent majority.

A lot more needs to be known and understood why such a huge increase (after TV and numbers of residents have quadrupled).

The match has been thrown toward the gasoline!

Is this how the new puppets plan to finance their promised 25% rollback on property taxes? :1rotfl:

I got the same letter today. It does not automatically increase the assessment. However, it allows the county commissioners to increase the assessment up to the maximum without any prior notice. The commissioners are also looking at new impact fees in addition the road impact fees. The 3 new commissioners seem to be tied to the old tax and spend model that failed miserably where they came from.

I also received the notice of a Sumter County fire protection assessment increasing from $125 to $360 per year. Thank goodness the Federal government will soon be giving me free monies in an amount to cover this local increase for the rest of my life. :icon_wink:

I belive we are well on our way for Sumter to be the highest taxed county in the state...

Increasing vs. Potential Future Cap.

Is it because the phone at the Fire Department rings everytime someone in The Villages calls because they overcooked a hot dog?

This assessment increase comes from the PWAC developer appointed members not the current Sumter county commissioners.

I wonder if the letter's writer meant that fees will increase incrementally until they reach the cap of $360 in a future year. In other words, not all at once. If they meant incrementally, they should have said so. If they meant "all at once," that is definitely meant to excite the voters, in a bad way.

:ohdear: Sorry..... that's NOT what it says. :)

The letter could have been written better.

It appears The County Commission has the right to adjust the fire protection assessment up to a maximum. The maximum allowed right now is $125.

The proposal is to raise the maximum allowed from $125 to $360.

This does not mean my assessment will increase, it only means that it can be increased without another public hearing.

Last year my assessment was $124 (or $1 under the maximum). On the one hand I could imagine my assessment would not increase since I'm in an established community that is not growing and therefore does not require additional funds to provide the same fire protection service. On the other hand, I've heard that song before in the State I lived in previously and watched as my assessment grew to reach the new maximum.

If approved, the change in the maximum does not mean my assessment will increase but it means it can increase and my experience has been that taxes and fees generally grow to fill all available space, at least for homeowners.

You caught me as I should have been more specific to say " increasing the maximum annual fire protection assessment to be imposed". And they are just thinking about an increase.:icon_wink:

Didn't the letter also mention a public hearing? Probably better answers there than the WAG opinions on here......
