John Maronto still working -- WHY?

Am I the only one who has issues with a high school football coach being arrested for soliciting a prostitute and keeping his job? This is a man who works with teens; is admired by them; is a true role model for them. Yet, John Maronto does something not only immoral but illegal and manages to keep his job. Is this because he wins? I don't get it!!!

I remember the outrage when Tiger Woods was found out. He may have slept with many women but nowhere was he accused of exploiting them. Prostitution is an exploitation of women and is rarely a profession willingly chosen. Why is there no outrage about this coach?

Where does he teach?

If a women teacher..

If a women teacher with a stellar teaching and coaching history had been arrested for prostitution would she be back on the job? No way!

Midland High School in New Daytona. He was busted in a sting. There's little question of his guilt from what I've been able to read. I guess he gets to stay around because he's the second-winningest coach in Florida history. Personally, I would not want him as a role model for my son (if I had one) or daughter, I was always under the illusion that teschers had morals clauses. Guess it only applies if you lose.

They are teenagers and they look up to him. I am glad my kids and grandkids didn't go to a school that would tolerate that kind of behavior.

That is just completely ROTTEN!

not sure about FL but MA has a "moral turpitude" clause in some districts still, I think it started back in the day, I had to ask what it was before I signed my contract

he should not be still a coach but again not my call

Mainland H.S. in Daytona Beach. It is located on International Speedway Blvd. just up from the speedway. They won the class 5 A state championship in 2003. He also coached at one time at Massillon Ohio's Washington High School knows as the Massillon Tigers. He coached there in 1985 to 1987 and had a record of 20 and 10.

So apparently he is a winning coach with not so winning morals.

Boo hiss.

SALYBOW 09-09-2010 08:16 PM

Is he even a teacher?

Not all, in fact most, coaches are not teachers so they would not have a morals clause. Had he been "just a teacher", He would have been fired.barf

Not defending him but aren't people in this country innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Put away the ropes and wait till he goes to trial, if found guilty he should be given the max. sentence under the law.

redwitch 09-10-2010 05:56 AM

This is a school that has a zero tolerance. Students are suspended upon ANY arrest -- no waiting for trial -- and expelled if found guilty. But because his team wins, this coach gets to stay? Teachers are at least suspended with or without pay once arrested. The school district's logic is that his crime doesn't hurt or affect the students. Sorry, doesn't cut it to me.

However, I still don't understand why there isn't more of an outcry, especially here. Many were (and are) willing to tar and feather Tiger Woods for marital infidelity. Yet a man who works directly with our youth is arrested for a crime that most definitely falls within the purview of immorality and not a word is said.

The hypocrisy of the school board is nauseating to me. The apathy of the "moral majority" is amazing to me. I guess it really only counts when you are really famous and it involves consenting adults in a lawful activity?

I grew up in Northern Nevada and remember...

...a wrestling coach who would award winning teams with a trip to the local brothel.

As far as I know though, this was not a practice that went over well with some of the other teachers/coaches nor with the parents in this school district. Prostitution was also legal in the County in which the winning team would be busing too.

From talks with some insurance agents who covered one of these whorehouses, the women working there worked in that profession for a wide variety of reasons. There were not all forced into it because of economic survival.

redwitch 09-10-2010 08:50 AM

Tal, legalized brothels are a lot different from the girls and women working the streets. The only protection they have is their pimp (if they have one), who is as apt to beat them as the johns. They have no medical and, thus, are more prone to diseases, especially AIDS and other STDs. They are frequently robbed.

And if a wrestling coach takes minors into a brothel, he should be charged with corrupting a minor. Even when legalized, it is illegal to take a minor into a house of prostitution. Those who work with minors should be held to higher standards. They are not only responsible for the physical well-being of these children, they are responsible for the mental health -- their choices do make a difference and do influence the minds of the kids who admire them.

Red - just curious - Is it the prostitution you mind (for reasons mentioned and I agree if the woman are abused) or would you feel the same about the exposed affairs (like Tiger)? Should he lose his position for that?

Is it the simple act of hiring a prostitute for cash that bothers you in regards to his position? Or is it the fact that where he did it was illegal?

Is this any different than a former president of our country getting sex from who knows? Wasn't he also a role model?

Would this guy be more of a role model if he just went into bars and found 'a girl for the night'? Should he lose his position for that?
