Parents of Disabled Young Person?

Hi all! I am wondering if there is anyone here who is the parent/guardian of a young person with disabilities? I am preparing to move there with my husband and daughter, who is an older teen with intellectual disability. I would love to ask questions of someone else who has been there!

Do you realize at Leesburg is home of beacon college, a very well regarded institution for those with special needs whether it's emotional or intellectual? I don't know if you would consider this or need it at this point. My best friends wife is retired but runs the state division of a non-profit involved in learning for the students needing additional help if you want I can put you in touch with her she lives in South Florida but might know a lot if you're interested

Our daughter has Williams Syndrome and she lives with us. She retired from a long career working at McDonalds. Last year she qualified as a senior citizen, now that she is past 55 so she isn't YOUNG. Helene enjoys Ceramics, Diamond Painting, Adult coloring, painting and jewelry making at Laurel Manor Regional Rec Center along with me. She also has many, many friends that are my friends as well who are Villagers. (I strongly suspect they put up with me because she is so charming and kind and articulate.) Helene swims and walks for exercise and reminds her father and I to take our pills and exercise more. Helene is kind of ordinary. She is our treasure.

I just reread your post and hope your daughter is at least 19. People must be 19 to live here full time.

I believe that there are special circumstances that are approved by the Villages management. I know of a family who are raising their minor age son who is wheelchair bound and he has his own Villagers ID card.

When we bought, I remember the real estate agent telling us TV will make exceptions for disabled youngsters. It would be worth checking on those exceptions.

Parents who move here with a disabled child age is not in the equation. We have friends who are both anesthesiologist, daughter is 15, wheelchair bound, and has a resident ID. Disability act comes into play with children.

Is that true if the child is disabled?

024engine 04-22-2021 04:54 AM

Not true if they are disabled.

024engine 04-22-2021 04:56 AM

Not true if they are disabled and need assistance.

I know of a couple that has a daughter with Downs Syndrome and she is 16 and live here full time. It is different if they are disabled. She goes everywhere with her parents...

I haven't ever heard that or seen it. I don't know of any issues with disability that would allow this bending of the rules. I could be wrong. I know of no disabled people living here under 19. Young people need their peers too.

It's not stated, but it can be done on an individual basis.
