Brown Tail Moth Infestation in Maine

Brown tail moth caterpillars love oak trees, and unfortunately these miserable things will eventually spread throughout New England and beyond.

I'll take the love bugs any day over this plague. Rashes are extremely common with folks. Contact with the caterpillars is not necessarily as their toxic hairs fly about. Yardwork becomes extremely hazardous. Raking leaves, mowing lawns... augh...

My wife never gets the rash. I'm beginning to think I married an alien.

Do the brown tail moths come before or after black fly season or during mud season or the one month of summer . Boston guy but love New Hampshire vacations but outside of a couple of coastal towns you can keep the state of Maine for all you cranky down Maine folks

I'm not from Maine. But it's a beautiful place to spend summers.

Except for those buggers.

I appreciate the good, hard working folks up here in Maine. This is my 20th year here and I'm quite familiar with who's who. I like the down east folks a great deal.

Some of those southern coastal towns you're referring to have been overrun with out of state folks that I definitely cannot relate to in any fashion.

Interpret that however anyone desires.

There's always an infestation of these moths in Maine..some years not so much...some years a ton...you can see the nests from quite far away and there are literally thousands of pupae in each nest...spent over 30 years in Maine and have been going there since the 50's...they spray them.

As to the folks from Mass, NY and Conn taking over s. Maine...yup and coastal as well...they get tired of the taxes south of Maine and then come up and start cloning local gov'ts to suit...it ain't pretty and I'll likely never go back due to that. They are not friendly and if you don't agree they'll just ignore you.

It's becoming less attractive to me as the infestation grows.

whether it’s Maine , the villages or wherever it’s the new people who change and ruin things , for many that’s the way it always was is a blood oath
