Jupiter Tonight

Is this the right forum for this? Should I put this in the Travel Forum? :p

JUPITER AT ITS BEST: Tonight, Sept. 20-21, Earth and Jupiter converge for their closest encounter in decades. The giant planet will soar across the sky at midnight, outshining everything except the Moon itself. Although big, bright Jupiter will remain close to Earth for weeks to come, tonight is the closest of all. Check http://spaceweather.com for images and more information.

Cool! If I can keep my eyes open at midnight, I'll keep them peeled toward the sky. Thanks, UU!

Will this be visible with the naked eye or will you need a telescope?

bkcunningham1 09-21-2010 05:04 PM

I read in National Geographic that you can use binoculars. With the naked eye, Jupiter will look like a very bright star beside the moon.

Thanks UU... I'll be sure to look to the sky on my way home tonight after dancing!!! :clap2:

You'll be able to see it just fine without binoculars or a telescope. It will be very bright, even with the full-ish moon. It's been bright in the night sky for a week or so, but it's closest to the earth tonight and tomorrow. It will be visible for another few weeks. Enjoy! :)

Thanks UUJudy!! That is usually about the time I get up for my midnight snack, so I will be sure to go outside and check it out. :coolsmiley:

I believe that the video that bkcunningham1 posted is a telescopic view of Jupiter and the dots on either side are some of its moons. I guess the power to be around 60-80. I've seen the moons at 40 power.

Bright moon.

Went out tonight to take photos of Jupiter. Moon is so bright that camera settings could not get photo of both together.

Got some of Jupiter alone at 300 mm lens setting but not too happy with them.

Chi-Town, the clip said, "Taken handheld with a digital camera held afocal up to the eyepiece as Jupiter passed through the field of view.
Baader Planetarium 17mm Hyperion eyepiece. Astro-Tech AT6M 6" Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope."

I don't know what any of that means to be honest.

Hahaha. BK, I don't know what that means either, but it sounds like they made the video at a racetrack. :p

tony 09-21-2010 09:07 PM

That means the view was about 105 power.

I see UU

Cloudy in ATL. All you can see in the sky are a showy full moon and bright silvery Jupiter!

Hi Judy,

We just got home a little while ago from seeing South Pacific and I looked in here and saw your post. So I went outside and looked and there it was, Jupiter, bright as bright could be. Made me want to sing "Some Enchanted Evening" again -- like I had been singing all the way home.

Thanks.

Boomer
