JUPITER AT ITS BEST: Tonight, Sept. 20-21, Earth and Jupiter converge for their closest encounter in decades. The giant planet will soar across the sky at midnight, outshining everything except the Moon itself. Will this be visible with the naked eye or will you need a telescope?

I read in National Geographic that you can use binoculars. With the naked eye, Jupiter will look like a very bright star beside the moon.

You'll be able to see it just fine without binoculars or a telescope. It will be very bright, even with the full-ish moon. It's been bright in the night sky for a week or so, but it's closest to the earth tonight and tomorrow. It will be visible for another few weeks. Enjoy! :)

I believe that the video that bkcunningham1 posted is a telescopic view of Jupiter and the dots on either side are some of its moons. I guess the power to be around 60-80. I've seen the moons at 40 power.

Went out tonight to take photos of Jupiter. Moon is so bright that camera settings could not get photo of both together.

Got some of Jupiter alone at 300 mm lens setting but not too happy with them.

Hahaha. BK, I don't know what that means either, but it sounds like they made the video at a racetrack. :p

That means the view was about 105 power.

Cloudy in ATL. All you can see in the sky are a showy full moon and bright silvery Jupiter!

Hi Judy,

We just got home a little while ago from seeing South Pacific and I looked in here and saw your post. So I went outside and looked and there it was, Jupiter, bright as bright could be. Made me want to sing "Some Enchanted Evening" again -- like I had been singing all the way home.
