Looking for No Sugar Added Ice Cream

It's hot and my husband is craving ice cream, but is diabetic. A few grocery stores sell no sugar added/low carb ice cream, but only in vanilla or chocolate flavors. Since so many TV residents are health conscious, we're surprised to find such limited choices in our area, south of 44. Has anyone else found a place that offers a variety of low-carb ice creams?

Have you tried Halo Top? Publix and Walmart sell them. It is based off of skim milk though. There is also Rebel based on heavy cream that is far better. They are usually stocked near each other though. Lots of flavors.

I love ice cream but I'm diabetic too. I've tried a few and can't really suggest one.

I try to eat more Dannon light yogurt (vanilla or coconut vanilla) and put a bit of strawberries or blueberries on it. Then on some special occasions I'll just indulge in the real stuff.
Let me know if you find a good one you like!

Just up the insulin, and go for it!

I gave up trying to find a satisfying low carb ice cream. I have an electric ice cream maker that someone gave me that I use all year round. I have found some decent recipes and tweaked a few to use multiple sweeteners like one third sugar, one third malitol or other sugar alcohol that usually doesn't spike blood sugar, one third stevia-based sweetener or splenda. I find using more than one sweetener allows you balance out the negatives of each. You can use pasteurized eggs so you don't have to cook it but if I have the time, I prefer the "heated" recipes and add the sugar in the beginning and the other sweeteners after I turn the heat off.

It's fun making your own, with the newest model makers, it is fast (20 minutes) and easy and can make virtually any flavor you want. My personal favorite is rum raisin which often take longer because of the alcohol. Some times it doesn't harden enough until it sits in the freezer a while.

Here is what Walmart has listed. If they don't have it, they will try to get it for you.

Check Mystic Ice cream (446a between Morse and 441), they make their own ice cream, while some contains alcohol, they have kids variety, not sure if they add any sugar.

I have tried all the commercial brands and they pretty much suck. I am also Diabetic (Type II) and I have been craving. I found some recipes online for homemade, that is being reviewed as very good - better than commercial. The best machines are $200 to $400 sadly. So, I am trying to convince myself my craving is that strong - LOL.

I maybe try a less expensive machine for homemade first and see if I like the taste. If so, I will see about trying to get my CFO's (wife) approval for that "GOOD" machine.

Completely agree, all that I've tried basically suck.

Sadly, typically, there are too many people giving advice who are totally unqualified to do so. Is the patient type one or type two diabetic? Testing blood sugars? On insulin? Milk is high in sugar called lactose. Fat, as in ice cream slows down the absorption of sugar

Alcohol, ie RUM RAISIN, Alcohol turns to sugar almost immediately. Raisins are dried grapes-loaded with fructose-sugar in fruits.

Our youngest grandson is Type1, and he knows how much to raise his insulin when he has an ice cream.
We did his working out when younger and staying with us, but now does his own carb counts, and acts accordingly.
Hard at first for us and him, but now just a part of his normal life.
Even when he is not with us, I can look at a meal and say, "Thats about a five!"

Don’t know about the stores but Mystic Ice Cream in 466a has no sugar added. Ollies’s up in Spanish Springs area has sugar free. Two different things.

When I was a kid I used to churn ice cream the old fashion way. I can't imagine doing that today, but it was fun. I, too, am diabetic II and love ice cream.

I think I will try to make my own again, but this time use one that MrPrez posted.
