Duke, UNC see unexpected COVID-19 clusters among vaccinated students

DURHAM, N.C. — The school year is off to a rocky start for at least two Triangle universities. Both have reported large COVID-19 clusters among vaccinated students before classes have even begun - and one even originated at an outdoor event.

Duke Vice President for Public Affairs Michael Schoenfeld says the cases were traced back to various indoor events in Durham. At least one was at a bar or restaurant, and others were in private homes. Duke has a near 100% vaccination rate.

Schoenfeld says about half the infected students are asymptomatic. The others have mild cold-like symptoms. The affected students will isolate for 10 days, and contract tracers will identify and test people who made contact with them.

Duke has a strict indoor mask requirement.

At UNC, the cluster involves at least six School of Pharmacy students. The vaccination rate for that school is about 94 percent.

WRAL broke the news that the outbreak was traced back to an outdoor pre-orientation party for PharmD students on August 2nd.

Neel Swamy, a third-year pharmacy student and peer mentor, was at the event. He said around 150 people were there.

"All outside, no indoor component, and students were wearing masks pretty much the entire time, other than when they were eating.

Good factual information from the bottom up instead of guesses from the top down.

We just have to get used to this. Going forward, with more being vaccinated, this will continue to be the case in all segments of life. It's encouraging that none of the students became seriously ill, and hopefully didn't have contact with someone who could.

So I asked my grandson who attends UNC about this, and his reply was that it's a big nothingburger.

He probably wasn’t invited to any of the parties.

Or, being there in the middle of it he knows a whole lot more about what's going on than the OPs "google search"

Got to agree with the grandson though, fully vaccinated students getting infected while outdoors with masks on is a real nothingburger.:shocked::shocked:

Vaccination does not prevent infection, especially the variant, it helps you fight Covid with milder symptoms. That's why I'll keep social distancing best I can.

My daughter is a professor at Middle Georgia State University. They have finished their first week of the fall semester. Classes are back in their regular classrooms this year at their regular sizes. Teachers are forbidden to require masks—that is left up to students. They are also forbidden to ask students if they have been vaccinated. About half the students come from a group that has been in the news for having a very low vaccination rate. My daughter has been vaccinated and wears a mask in her classes. I suspect her school will have a lot more Covid cases than Duke will have.

The hype has to stop! Normal was... You got sick you took care of yourself and you and others went in with life. Now is stupid, forget trying to have a life, just work on not being sick. Ugh!!

RICH1 08-15-2021 07:37 AM

Only higher IQ people that are financially stable wear masks! The others are running out of money and don't care! ...

Andyb 08-15-2021 07:39 AM

So, it appears the vaccinated are spreading the virus.

vb993 08-15-2021 08:03 AM

Did you count how many of the vaccinated either died or ended up in the ICU on a ventilator?

Yep. CDC not even counting breakthrough cases anymore.

I am vaccinated and think all eligible should get the shots, UNLESS they have already had covid and have natural immunity which is proven to be stronger against Delta variant.

However, the vaccinated are getting infected, and spreading the virus, which makes the idea of vaccine passports even more ludicrous.

Waltdisney4life 08-15-2021 09:06 AM

So your point is that vaccines do not work!!
But yet people insist on others getting your vaccine that does not work you can’t have your cake and eat it too which is Do the vaccines work? Sounds to me like they do not!
