Amber Outdoor Bulbs For Fewer Bugs
 

I’ve searched TOTV and Amazon for outdoor bulbs that attract fewer bugs. Couldn’t find anything on TOTV. Amazon of course has hundreds of yellow bulbs with mixed reviews.

An article on the Internet caught my attention which claimed a scientific side by side comparison of colored bulbs found that warm lights in the 2000K color spectrum attracted far fewer bugs than yellow bulbs, even those that claimed they did not emit hidden blue color.

Unfortunately most of the warm color bulbs that I found appear to have an early Edison-type filament look rather than a more contemporary looking bulb.

Does anyone have experience or opinions about outside lighting that doesn’t attract bugs?

I sure do. I purchased "Yellow" bulbs from Amazon that claimed they would not attract bugs on my outdoor lamppost. The truth is they attract bugs just like regular bulbs do.

Tried yellow bulbs years ago, no difference.

We must all realize that people selling stuff will not say it is a waste of money. In terms of yellow bulbs they used to sell yellow bug bulbs. I've not seen them or looked for them in years.

In terms of bulbs and attracting insects, Some bugs are attracted to light, others are not.
At one time had one of those black light bug electrocution lights it killed mostly moths which are attracted to light. Never mosquitoes.

We have warm tone LEDs in our lamp post and it does not attract insects. Why-beats me.We have a bottle brush bush by the light-perhaps that is the reason.

Spraying-I am not an organic nut but I've discovered over the years, they are right.
When you spray you not only kill what you wish to kill but you kill the other insects and animals that feed on them. I do not spray. We do not have insect problems. We are loaded with the oreols-small lizzards and they feed on insects. Bats too kill tons of insects.

Made a noticeable difference for me (of course YMMV). The inside of my 2 outside garage fixtures were like an insect burial ground and my security camera right next to one of them looked like a haze of flying bugs all night. After putting these in it's 10x better (still some buggers on some nights) but has been great for the last year so far. If they don't work for you just return 'em to Amazon.

I have a 'warm white' looks yellowish LED bulb in the lamp post and it seems to have significantly lowered the amount of bugs on the house. This was installed a couple of years ago, so I do not remember where I got it.

I just changed out my front porch lights a month ago to the yellow bulbs. It really cut down on the flying bugs.

Yes turn off the pole light… just flip the breaker in the garage.

If you just flip off the breaker in the garage, none of your outlets will work in the garage, same circuit as lamp post.

Some people have refrigerators in their garages that are on the same circuit as the outdoor pole light and don’t realize it. Be careful when telling people to just flip the breaker.

Not true at our home but it’s a newer home… breaker specific for pole lamp.

Ok so some homes the pole breaker is connected to other outlets…. so be safe and always check that out first.

I use an LED yellow light bulb year round in our lamp post and in our outside light for our patio. I use the equivalent to 100 watts and since I changed to these bulbs, there are a lot less bugs.

We bought amber bulbs and there was an immediate reduction in bugs. They give off plenty of light, and I feel are a much more pleasant light than the glaring bright white bulbs in the majority of houses. We ordered over a year ago on Amazon.

We and a few of our neighbors have switched to flame effect bulbs from Amazon. They have a flickering soft light and no bugs surrounding them.
