11 Reasons to NOT Retire in Florida

Some of these doesn't pertain to us like #3 and #6

#11 is stupid.
It should be your personal choice way before making the move.

I see 1, 2, and 3 as positives.

5 is a negative (sweating) but I'm not sure where to retire that doesn't have either sweating or shoveling and I'll take the sweating.

The math in 4 and 7 seems to be a bit off. Particularly in 7 where $177 per week for maintenance plus $100 to $600 per month for heating all adds up to $3,000 per year (my calculator shows something a bit higher). Besides, I use the neighborhood pools so.....

I read the article as more lighthearted then mean spirited as a long time resident theres a lot of truth in it but it’s still paradise to me

Maybe it's a good thing, let them retire in Seattle.

Summer is my only negative (hot)

Clickbait.
Nothing new here.
It's hot, it has bugs, hurricanes, old people, and the sun might mess up you skin.
Earthshaking, right?

I'm a seasonal, looking forward very much to exposing myself to all these harsh realities in just 7 days!

The biggest reason for some not retiring to Florida is not mentioned. In one word - medical….Growth exceeding the number of doctors, facilities and nurses makes medical a major issue in Florida. Medical is not as big a problem if you have the money to travel where the medical is located. However, in some instances, if the medical condition is when time is important travel could be deadly. In big growth communities like The Villages, the influx of so called snowbirds overwhelms the ER and other medical facilities in the area. Wait times are frustrating and can cause pain and suffering during this seasonal time of the year. All that said, for many Florida and especially The Villages is still ahead of whatever is in second place as a retirement community.

An aunt and uncle retired to Florida in the early 1970s and kept their physicians in Maryland as they found Florida medical care lacking. That has not changed, especially as God's Waiting Room continues to grow in population at an astonishing rate.

I think Bob deservers a Pulitzer for this piece. Its' hot in FL, there's bugs here too, there's old people and a lot of sun. Wow, cutting edge stuff here. I normally like Kiplinger's, every once in a while they go off the rails though.
