Wood or aluminum 2X4's?

I think I just learned the hard way after trying to hang a heavy wall object that there are no wood studs used in my walls. I located studs using my edge finder (not 16" on center either) but my wood screws did not bite. I made a mess of the wall. It is an interior wall and not load bearing and my house is stucco/cinderblock. Poking around the edge of a electrical wall switch box it feels like a metal stud is adjacent and not wood. Is this the case with houses built here or at least circa 2010?

To clarify, the metal studs are steel, not aluminum. The houses are constructed using a combination of wood and metal studs. There are several other threads on this topic. Do a search. But, basically, you need to verify what type of stud you have before you try to hang something on it.

They make suitable anchors for metal studs depending on what you plan to hang. I have had no trouble hanging everything for pictures to a 75 inch TV on the metal studs.

I was told that any bearing wall would have wooden studs, I have a Mossy oak, wood studs on what is usually the "Media Wall" I have also been told you can get a digital copy of your blueprints through the county (I haven't done that yet but will) and that should give you a lot of information

The house blue prints are very handy, ours were 16 or 17 pages and I have used these several times. I was able to get these emailed (pdf format) from the Sumter County building dept.

Do you have address?

Use something like this to find your stud

Amazon.com

Use something like this to determine if stud is metal or wood

Amazon.com

If you have a metal stud, I have used this type of anchor for many projects that require solid anchoring

Amazon.com

A magnetic stud finder will tell you if its a wood or metal stud. Home depo sells them.

Do you just ask for plans for your model or specific address? What was the charge?

Ask for your address, no charge, IF emailed, paper copies from the A/E were around $250.

Thank you for that. Do these plans also detail the properties irrigation system layout?

No, I have not been able to find any plans for any piping going , from or around the house. If you need to locate irrigation lines, your best bet might be to contact home warranty and ask what company installed the system, then call and see if they can spot and mark the lines, for a cost of course.
