Yellowing Palm Needs Help

Any recommendations for tree specialist's?

davem4616 11-03-2021 12:29 PM

you might try Village Palm...they have some trained folks on staff...bring a few pictures over and ask for Danny

if it's just yellow fronds, it may just be hungry...they do require regular feeding. Home Depot has a palm tree fertilizer

good luck

Epsom Salts spread around the perimeter of our Robilini does the trick for new growth. You can’t fix existing fronds that are yellow.

Master Gardener’s program can help you figure this out.

If all fronds are yellow and the new shoots and not just couple lower big ones it maybe beyond help. If only couple are yellow and are the bottom big ones in natural dying yellowing cause they are about ready to trimmed off.

Stihl.

Made 3 calls plus email to Tree Frog and got no reply. Fertilizer and extra water helped mine. Jobe spikes give time release feeding

Very strange to hear indeed. Tree Frog has been servicing our palms for quite a while now and ALWAYS very responsive. In fact, he stops by when in our area, so many of our neighbors were that impressed with the work he and his crew did in our yards, both front and back. Have recommended them extensively and everyone we know that has used them was equally thrilled. They are NOT cheap, but this is one of those "you get what you pay for" and they guarantee and stand by their work.

So many reasons fronds turn yellow. Could be natural aging of lower limbs. Poor handling prior to/during installation is VERY common. Poor watering practices. Overwatering if in a clay 'bowl' underground. under-watering if very sandy and a water loving palm (Massey was turning off bubblers on newly planted palms in Osceola a few years ago, I hope I put a stop to that). Fla soil is alkaline, so if you are not acidifying your soil , your tree is not picking up those badly needed micro-nutrients it needs, EVEN IF you are using even the best of fertilizers out there. There are bud beetles, Decline syndrome, physical storm damage.. There are volumes out there on disease and insects, but the most common things, are either not a problem or caused by the install. And again EVERYONE, should be adjusting the pH. Why the rest of the 'pros' out there don't address pH is beyond me.

In the end, there are only a handful of experts out there, and even fewer who will tell you the truth if it isn't putting money in their pocket. If you are N of HWY 44, PM me and I will look at it, and let you know what I think.

Tree Frog is great. He is expensive and busy! When I talked to him the first time about the same problem you are having he told me exactly what to do. The first available appointment was 3 months out. He had us go buy LESCO Palm and Tropical Ornamental Fertilizer and put it out. ( Do not get on your hard scape, it will stain it.) Also get a bag of Black Kow. It has worked. He was great and came at our scheduled appointment. He is a certified Arborist. Give him another call. It is worth it.

Another vote for “Tree Frog” but would caution about using a home remedy before you speak with them. This is the season for the palms to rest for the winter.

We gave ours their last fertilization in September. Next time is March.

Yellowing Palms

Here's a good article about yellowing palms:Florida Today

Also, consult with the UF extension office, Master Gardeners. Besides their office in Bushnell, they also have an office in the building complex next to the sheriff and the Sumter tax collector's office/fire station, off 466 and Morse.

I believe you are right on target! Unless you are growing a native sabal palm most of the palms in our landscape need a lower PH than is seen in most of The Villages. (Have you soil tested for your soil PH) For some reason most Villagers use rocks and landscape fabric and mummify their palms and plants in cement brick stacked, hacienda walls. This practice contributes to raising soil PH. Many soils in the Villages have a PH around 8. This is too high for many palm species and the nutrients from fertilizers are locked up and unavailable to the palm tree. As Ozzello says soils need to be acidified. Whether you use pine bark mulches or soil acidifiers, the key is to get that soil more neutral or slightly acidic. If you use chemicals it is best to hire a knowledgeable expert rather than do it yourself. Spreading mulches can be done by the the homeowner. It is not easy to lower our alkaline soils, but at least you can try to moderate it and that will help your palms get the nutrients they need from the soil.
