Christmas Palm? Do you have one?
 

We are looking at various cold hardy, low maintenance, 10-12 feet at maturity......a Christmas Palm has been suggested.
I have never heard of it.

I have consulted Dr. Google, but I am interested in first hand experience.

They look good! I may do that myself.

Easy tree to maintain fronds fall off no need to trim red fruit seeds. Unfortunately susceptible to freeze we are zone 9a/9b

Was the person suggesting it as cold hardy selling them? Very bad choice, unless in a screened in lanai or pool deck.

Seems to be several landscape outfits (many staffed with people from up north, S. Fla. and with either no horticultural education, or no scruples... selling people Christmas , Bottle, Foxtail Areca and other sub tropical palm trees. Before you spend hundred or even thousands on these palms, buy Betrock's Cold Hardy Palms. Is easy to understand, and extremely accurate. Landscaping your neighbors house or a nice advertising budget doesn't mean your landscaper isn't steering you wrong.

I'm not an arborist. Looked it up on Google. Is this a Christmas Palm?

Christmas Palm Not Cold Hardy
 

We had a beautiful double Christmas Palm planted next to our pool, next to a lake in Sarasota, FL which is South of here and near the Gulf. All factors that should have protected it from the cold. We lost it in a killing frost after it was well established for about five years. Other palms like foxtails and pygmy dates survived. Plant a Christmas palm at your own risk. I wouldn't.

They are not cold hardy
 

We had a Christmas Palm in The Villages. It didn't last the winter. A freeze got it.

Christmas palms are beautiful palms. Extremely easy to care for, self shedding so you never have to trim anything except the seed pods. We had three triples at our house in Key Largo. I really wanted to plant them here, but we get a little too cold in the winter. My neighbor put some in last summer. This past winter many of the fronds were damaged by the cold. Last week the last of the damaged fronds fell off and they look great again - just in time for another winter. Last winter was pretty mild. It’s a real gamble planting them here.

They will die with consecutive below freezing nights. You have to cover them. But they are so worth it. Hardly any maintaining them. No pods or thorns. Fronds just fall off. Slow growing. We are getting another one soon.

In my opinion most palms are not good trees for landscaping. Simply because they need maintenance at least yearly.

Palm trees harbor rats and Palmetto bugs. Had all our queens removed!

It must be stuff in your area. Never had that problem ever

I like the European Fan Palm.
10-15 ft max, easy to trim yourself.
No rats or bugs.
Good down to 20 deg.
