Yamaha Golf Cart Keys
 

Does Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace Hardware make duplicate Yamaha (2015) golf cart keys? If not, who does please? Thank you.

I had one made at Lowes, worked just fine.

You can order online, there are only about 8 different keys.

I just ordered uncommon keyed OEM G29 Ignition switch off eBay. Took all of 20 mins. To swap it out. Now I have extra layer so security so all common keys won’t fit my ignition. I think I paid 35 bucks for set with two keys.

We got our key blank through the Villages Golf Cart store in Brownwood. The key was then cut to fit at Sparr off 44

I got a replacement key at The Village Golf Car Store, Spanish Springs.

The Villages Golf Cars charges a lot of money for the blanks because they are the only Yamaha dealer close to The Villages. Maybe $10 for each blank. Then you have to pay to get it cut.

Find a cart thief and ask him! They carry a full set of Yamaha keys, which, I've heard number 8 or 10. The same is true for all brands of golf carts, which makes them easy to steal.

Follow the best advice in this thread and have your ignition switch changed to one for a car or tractor which uses a regular key. Napa Auto Parts sells a "tractor" ignition switch. It is a 2-way switch (on-off only) and does not have a third position to start the engine. In golf carts, that function is controlled by the gas pedal. The switch is also available from Amazon for less than $10.

Changing the switch is simple if you have even a modicum of experience and a few basic tools. If you don't, take the cart to a dealer or call a mobile repair service.

I took a slightly different route and installed a "barrel switch" in the dash as a cut-out. Now, when I park the cart outside a restaurant or store, I turn off both the ignition switch and the cut-out. Another option is to install a cut-out for the battery.

Installing a cut-out is more complicated as you have to drill a hole in the dash, cut the primary(red) wire to the existing ignition switch, and install the barrel switch between the two ends of the primary wire. It makes a neat installation. Barrel switches are the type you see on vending machines, and some alarm boxes. The key is in the form of a hollow tube, 1/4" in diameter with cuts made on the outside of the tube which correspond to protrusions inside the switch. You insert the key into a circular opening on the face of the switch.

I chose this set-up as thieves may carry all sorts of keys for regular ignition switches; however, I doubt many will be carrying a barrel key, or, if he does, that he will have the right one for my cut-out switch.
