New Science Editor at Daily Sun?

"New space telescope reaches final stop near Sun"

Well not quite. It is parked in a location called Lagrange point 2, one million miles FURTHER AWAY from the Sun than is the Earth

Dana1963 01-25-2022 10:16 AM

The dumbing down of The Villagers β€œ it must be factual I read it in The Daily Sun β€œ...

Perhaps it's nearer than any other telescope....since you say that is further then you might clarify in comparison to what? it seems naturally the assumption that "near" was in relation to something not mentioned in your post.

The newspaper just says "New space telescope reaches final stop near Sun" - so it claims it is "near" the Sun, not nearer the Sun than something else

and since L2 is 1 million miles from the Earth on the non-Sunny side, every telescope on Earth is nearer the Sun than this one

I think you could even go further. Every telescope ever produced in all history is closer to the sun than this telescope.

While there are probes out further with telescopic cameras, they aren't considered space telescopes.

I have said it once (well maybe more than just once) and will say it again. if the Sun had a living breathing editor perhaps some of these silly errors would not happen.

Seems like it is more important to try, convict and execute the three new commissioners than to prevent factual errors.

Science editor? You’re kidding, right? I sometimes wonder if they even have an editor.

 Once again I find myself a little confused. Can any of the HATERS tell me what the reply from the Associated Press was to your complaint about their story...... it was an AP story carried in the Daily Sun and dozens of other papers. Maybe I'll ask an easier question..... how many actually read the story and how many are just piling on?

There seems little point in blaming the AP when their headline was:

New space telescope reaches final stop million miles out | AP News

which is factually correct as the location is one million miles from the Earth.

It is the local rag that saw fit to change the headline. If there is no editor, why is anyone assuming the role of changing the wording of what they download for reprinting from something that is correct to something that is laughably wrong?

IMHO, if you hate the local paper as much as some of these posters appear to...then stop reading it...

or at the very least, go down to Publix and get some cheese to go along with your whine

We get the paper for current activities in the Villages and also for some sports news.

For actual news not so much. Their constant criticism of the new commissioners is kind of laughable. Besides threads like this are fun.

MorTech 01-27-2022 01:59 PM

Maybe "sun" is now the new euphemism for areas just outside of L2 orbit :)

As I have explained in prior threads, I have taken the paper for ten years and enjoy spotting blatant errors and unprofessionalism in it. That is not the same as hating it; it is the opposite. If they made a T-shirt "I love the Daily Sun" I would be second in line (after you, I suspect) buying one for each of my friends and relatives for Christmas.

So here's a solution to your high blood pressure: If you see a thread started by me with a subject matter in any way relating to the Daily Rag, just pass on by as it is NOT going to be complimentary. Don't open it, read it and get annoyed. Just say no.

IMO it is not a case of HATING the newspaper, it is more a case of being rather disappointed that we don't have a more intelligent offering in TV. In our house it is called "The funnies" and we buy it so that my other half can do the Sudoku every day, oh and also the sports. Other than that there is little of substance and no real news.

fdpaq0580 01-27-2022 05:24 PM

I wonder ...

I often wonder if they actually read the paper before they print it to check for mistakes. If they do, then my guess is "auto-correct" is likely the culprit for errors.
Like you, I enjoy the Daily Sun. Light reading goes well with breakfast and morning coffee.
